The Nashville Predators forward became the second NHL player to score the skillful goal when he picked up the puck on his stick blade and beat goalie Mike Smith against the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday.
Svechnikov, a forward for the Carolina Hurricanes, was the only other player to execute the lacrosse goal. He scored in that manner twice, against the Calgary Flames on Oct. 29 and Winnipeg Jets on Dec. 19.
But Forsberg joined the exclusive club in the first period when he possessed the puck behind the goal, picked it up on his backhand, without slowing down, and stashed it by Smith for Nashville's first goal.
"It's something I've tried a couple of times," Forsberg said. "It's cool that it went in."
The highlight-reel goal wowed his teammates and coach John Hynes.
"It was sick; it was unbelievable," said goalie Pekka Rinne. "It was one of the nicest goals I've seen live. It's just unbelievable skill, and [that] he pulls that out in a game is so impressive."
"A pretty high-skilled play," Hynes said. "You don't see those come around too often."
Unfortunately for Forsberg and the Predators, the Oilers put a damper on the incredible goal by defeating Nashville 4-2.
