The 28-year-old defenseman was named the Rangers' first captain since defenseman Ryah McDonagh
, who was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Feb. 26, 2018.
"It's a huge honor, and it's something that means something, especially here in this organization, with its history and past players who were captain before me," Trouba
said
. "As a kid, I grew up watching Leetch and Messier, Drury and Jagr. Those names were all prominent to me as a kid and then you come here and learn about the history of the guys before them. You see pictures, you see jerseys of this place and it's now my turn to carry that legacy on for those guys."
Trouba is the 28th captain in team history. To congratulate him, different members of the Rangers shared messages on social media.
"Congrats, Troubs," Chris Kreider said. "So happy for you, buddy. You've been doing the job for a while now so it's nice to see you get the letter sewn on your jersey. You've been a leader on the ice, a leader off the ice and a leader in the community."
