The 27-year-old defenseman, who was an unrestricted free agent, had nine points (one goal, eight assists) in 64 games for the Florida Panthers and Buffalo Sabres last season, including one assist in 16 games after he was acquired in a trade with the Sabres on March 20.

Selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the second round (No. 41) of the 2013 NHL Draft, Hagg has 56 points (14 goals, 42 assists) in 300 regular-season games for the Panthers, Sabres and Flyers, and three assists in 14 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
The Red Wings have made several key signings since free agency began July 13, including forwards David Perron (two years, $4.75 million average annual value), Andrew Copp (five years, $5.625 AAV) and Dominik Kubalik (two years, $2.5 million AAV), and defensemen Ben Chiarot (four years, $4.75 million AAV), Olli Maatta (one year, $2.25 million) and Mark Pysyk (one year, $850,000). Derek Lalonde was named coach on June 30 to replace Jeff Blashill after four seasons as an assistant with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Detroit, which has missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs in six straight seasons, was 32-40-10 and finished sixth in the Atlantic Division last season.
