Jack Eichel helped kick off National Nurses Week in a big way.

The Buffalo Sabres captain surprised the nursing staff at the Buffalo-based Roswell Park Hospital with bouquets of flowers on National Nurses Day on Wednesday.

Eichel's mom Anne is a nurse at Boston Medical Center, which is what prompted his donation. Each nurse received the flowers with a personalized message from Eichel.

"From the moment I first arrived in Buffalo, I was welcomed by the Roswell Park family with open arms," Eichel's message said. "Seeing the compassionate, life-saving care you provide has been really inspirational for me. Growing up with a mom who is a nurse, I know how emotionally dedicated you all are, and I want to thank you for all you do and the sacrifices you make."

National Nurses Week is extra special this year as nurses help the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. The NHL released a video Wednesday with players

for their efforts.

The nurses at Roswell Park also shared their appreciation for Eichel's gesture.

"This is a challenging week for nurses because of the COVID crisis," Roswell Park president and CEO Dr. Candace Johnson said in a video posted to Twitter, "but you've consistently been there for Roswell Park. You've been fantastic with us through thick and thin, and thank you so much for acknowleding these incredible nurses that we have."
