Oilers rally for overtime win

EDMONTON --Zach Hyman scored 1:37 into overtime, and the Edmonton Oilers rallied to defeat the San Jose Sharks 5-4 at Rogers Place on Thursday.

Hyman took a pass from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and scored on a one-timer to cap off the rally after Edmonton trailed three times in the game.
"We found a way to win," Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft said. "We obviously didn't start the way we wanted to start tonight, but credit to our players, that on a night where everything wasn't firing on all cylinders, they found a way to win."
Kailer Yamamoto had a goal and an assist, Philip Broberg scored his first NHL goal, and Mikko Koskinen made 40 saves for Edmonton (48-27-6), which has won six of its past seven games.

Noah Gregor scored two goals, Logan Couture had two assists, and James Reimer made 26 saves for San Jose (32-36-13).
"I thought we played strong for most of the game, we had a lot of O-zone time which is something we haven't been able to do a lot throughout the year, so that was a big positive," Gregor said. "But holding on to leads, we weren't quite able to do it, and when you're in those situations you can't let them back in the game. Then they win it in overtime."
Gregor gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead at 2:42 of the first period after Koskinen played the puck into the corner off a shot from Jonah Gadjovich and Sasha Chmelevski fed Gregor in the right face-off circle. He scored 26 seconds later to make it 2-0 when his centering a pass went in off the skate of Oilers defenseman Evan Bouchard. It was Gregor's first two-goal game in the NHL.
"It was nice, there were lots of family and friends in the crowd," said Gregor, who is from Beaumont, Alberta, an Edmonton suburb. "It's nice to score a goal at any time in the NHL, but in your hometown, it's extra special."
Ryan McLeod cut it to 2-1 on the power play at 9:17 of the second period, scoring on a rebound.
Yamamoto tied it 2-2 at 12:52, converting from the slot off a behind-the-back pass from Leon Draisaitl on a 2-on-1.
"It was one of those ones where we knew we weren't fully on the top of our game," Oilers defenseman Brett Kulak said. "But we knew we could trust our process and go back to the simple things and keep chipping away at it. We have a lot of offense, we don't really have an issue scoring goals. We just kind of stuck with it and ended up getting it done."

Scott Reedy gave the Sharks a 3-2 lead on the power play at 15:35, tipping in a point shot from Brent Burns.
"It was one of our better games offensively, on the cycle and generating chances, so there were some positives out of this game," Sharks coach Bob Boughner said. "I sort of knew things were going to open up a little bit. We didn't want to do that obviously, but when you take some penalties, they start to feel good and they start to touch the puck and you can see them foaming at the mouth when they get those opportunities."
Derek Ryan tied it 3-3 at 9:37 of the third period, deflecting a point shot from Tyson Barrie, which then went in off Sharks defenseman Nicolas Meloche in front.
Nick Bonino gave San Jose a 4-3 lead at 10:40, on a pass out front from Couture.

SJS@EDM: Broberg ties it with his 1st NHL goal

Broberg scored to tie it 4-4 at 11:45 on a pass from Connor McDavid.
"Connor made a really good play," said Broberg, who was recalled from Bakersfield of the American Hockey League Thursday morning. "I snuck down a little bit and tried to get it on net and it ended up going in. It was an unbelievable feeling, for sure. It is always good to get the first one."
