SJS@LAK: Kane scores second-chance equalizer late

LOS ANGELES -- Evander Kane scored the tying goal with 45 seconds left for the San Jose Sharks in a 4-3 shootout win against the Los Angeles Kings at Staples Center on Tuesday.

Logan Couture scored for the third straight game, and Martin Jones made 24 saves for the Sharks (5-5-1), who have won two of three.
"It was a little bit of a roller coaster," Couture said. "The first period was obviously great. Second period, we had a lull, as we've done most of the season, so we've got to figure a way to change that. Third period, we were OK, but it was nice to score a goal less than a minute left and get that point. Getting a second one in overtime or a shootout is very important right now, so we'll take it, but there's definitely a lot of stuff we can clean up."
Couture scored the only goal in the shootout. Jones made saves against Anze Kopitar and Gabriel Vilardi, and Los Angeles forward Lias Andersson hit the post on his attempt.

Dustin Brown scored two goals and had an assist for the Kings (3-6-3), who lost their fifth straight game despite taking the lead after falling behind by two goals. Cal Petersen made 37 saves.
San Jose forward Patrick Marleau played his 1,734th game to pass Jaromir Jagr for third in NHL history. The 41-year-old needs 23 games to move ahead of Mark Messier (1,756) for second and 34 to pass Gordie Howe (1,767) for first.
"I thought he was unreal tonight, I thought he played his best game of the year," Couture said. "He can still skate. He can probably play until he's 65 and still be able to skate in the NHL."
Brown gave the Kings a 3-2 lead at 10:45 of the third period on a wrist shot from the right face-off circle, but Kane tied it when he jammed a rebound into an open net at 19:15 with Jones pulled for an extra attacker.
"'Kaner' has been pretty good the last few games, and it's nice to see him where he's getting that goal from," Sharks coach Bob Boughner said. "Digging around the blue paint, I think that's his game, and he's a big body and tough to move out of there. He did an excellent job with a timely goal."
Kopitar scored on a breakaway to get the Kings within 2-1 at 7:00 of the second period. Brown tied it 2-2 at 17:54 when he put in the rebound of Adrian Kempe's shot on the power play.

The Sharks led 2-0 after the first period. Timo Meier put them ahead 1-0 1:22 into the game with a backhand into an open net following sustained pressure in the offensive zone.
Couture made it 2-0 at 17:48 when he scored with a one-timer off a pass from Marleau during a delayed penalty.
"It was a good game after the first. Our whole team didn't show up in the first," Brown said.
Kings defenseman Drew Doughty left the game at 6:13 of the third period after he was struck in the right arm blocking a shot by Brent Burns. Los Angeles coach Todd McLellan did not have an update after the game.
NOTES: Brown has scored seven points (four goals, three assists) in the past five games. … The Kings have allowed the first goal in 10 of their 12 games (2-5-3). … Sharks defenseman Nikolai Knyzhov had the secondary assist on Couture's goal for his first NHL point in his 14th game.
