Alex-Ovechkin

WASHINGTON -- Alex Ovechkin scored to move up the NHL all-time goals list and lift the Washington Capitals to a 4-1 win against the San Jose Sharks at Capital One Arena on Monday.
He passed Mark Recchi for 20th when he scored the 578th goal of his career on a breakaway at 7:11 of the second period to put Washington ahead 2-0.

"I was surprised," said Ovechkin, whose 20 goals lead the NHL. "I don't have a good backhand, but it goes in. I try to do it again in the third period, but I don't have that skill. One worked. I'll take it."

Ovechkin needed 949 games to reach 578 goals. Recchi did it in 1,652.

"When Ovi is skating like he was skating tonight, he's a force," Capitals coach Barry Trotz said. "That you can pass some great players in this league in terms of production and to do it with a difference of 700 games, that just blows my mind. I don't even know how to respond to that."
