Scott-Mayfield-1-4-18

Defenseman Scott Mayfield agreed to terms on a five-year contract with the New York Islanders on Thursday. Financial terms were not disclosed.

"It's exciting," the 25-year-old said. "You've got to focus on the game, but at the same time it's nice to get it done. We've been talking for a little bit, and it's a little bit of confidence in me and little bit of term for me. I'm excited to be here."
Mayfield could have become a restricted free agent July 1. He has 10 points (two goals, eight assists) and has averaged 17:34 of ice time in an NHL career-high 29 games this season.
"You have the deal done, now I just focus on playing, nothing else," Mayfield said. "Don't have to worry about contract talks, talking to the agent, none of that stuff anymore. Settled down for a little bit, gives me a little stability. I didn't have much stability my first four years pro. I've spent quite a few hotel nights, a lot of drives between Bridgeport (in the American Hockey League) and Long Island. Nice to get it done, nice to be here full-time."
The Islanders selected Mayfield in the second round (No. 34) of the 2011 NHL Draft. He has 20 points (five goals, 15 assists) in 65 games since making his NHL debut on April 6, 2014.
"My thing is not so much the money; I wanted to be here," Mayfield said. "They drafted me, I played here, played in the minors, all that. I want to be here because we have a chance to win here. When I started playing pro hockey it was to win the Stanley Cup and we have a good chance here."
