"He's battled some things," Flames general manager Brad Treliving said Saturday. "It's unfortunate. The good news in here is he's got a lot of time to get this addressed. He had his other hip, his left hip, done last year (May 2021) and it feels great and he's doing wonderful. This is now sort of the next challenge for him. He's got a lot of time to get it addressed before next year.
"But no question a great deal of disappointment. We talked a lot yesterday. At the end of the day it is what it is. When your body is telling you you can't do it, you can't do it. We'll get it fixed and move forward."
Treliving said the surgery will be scheduled soon and that Monahan is expected to be ready for the start of training camp.
"Last year he had the same procedure and I think he was 4 1/2 months that he was gone," Treliving said. "... The one thing you know with Sean is he's going to attack it hard and he'll be back."
Monahan scored 23 points (eight goals, 15 assists) in 65 games this season. The 27-year-old was a Flames-worst minus-15 and averaged 14:04 of ice time.
He played primarily on the fourth line this season and was scratched in two of his past four games.
"Definitely very tough news not only for him but the rest of us as well," Calgary forward Matthew Tkachuk said. "It's similar to what he's dealt with before so he kind of knows what to expect and how to treat it and all the process. When you go through an injury like that, probably the hardest part is not knowing what's coming or how long, but he's kind of got a good idea. Just feel for him. It's awful. But he'll come back better than ever. Just tough timing for him."
The Flames (41-19-9) lead the Los Angeles Kings by five points for first place in the Pacific Division.
"You go in that room there and there's 23 guys that love the kid," Treliving said. "He wears a letter (alternate captain) for a reason. He's had a different role, that's the best way to put it, this year than last or the previous seven or eight in his career. He went about it with a smile on his face and just went to work. ... Doesn't whine.
"'What can I do to help the team win?' ... That's what Sean Monahan is all about."
Monahan had wrist surgery after the 2016-17 season and had four surgeries, one for his wrist and groin, and two to repair hernias, after being shut down near the end of the 2017-18 season.
"This guy plays through a lot of things, and to question him is wrong," Treliving said. "Most people out there couldn't play through a third of what he has. And he keeps it to himself. This isn't stuff where people are forcing him out on the ice.
"I don't know how long it's been bothering him. He's gotten treatment like everybody gets treatment. In the last couple days he said, 'I've got a problem here.' So once you say you've got a problem, you get it looked at and it needs to get taken care of."
Monahan, who was selected by the Flames with the No. 6 pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, has scored at least 20 goals in each of his first seven NHL seasons, including a career-high 34 in 2018-19.
In nine NHL seasons, he's scored 462 points (212 goals, 250 assists) in 656 regular-season games, and 21 points (10 goals, 11 assists) in 30 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
Monahan has one season remaining on a seven-year contract he signed Aug. 19, 2016.
