Recap: Seattle Kraken @ Edmonton Oilers 11.15.23

EDMONTON -- Evander Kane completed a natural hat trick at 2:57 of overtime after scoring late in the third period, and the Edmonton Oilers rallied for a 4-3 win against the Seattle Kraken at Rogers Place on Wednesday.

Kane won it on a one-timer from Zach Hyman after tying it 3-3 when he swatted a feed from Leon Draisaitl past goalie Joey Daccord with 46 seconds left. He started the rally at 13:28 of the third when he cut it to 3-2 on a redirection of Bouchard’s feed.

Edmonton scored three goals in the third in a 4-1 win against the New York Islanders on Monday in Kris Knoblauch’s debut as coach.

“Obviously, these last couple games we’ve had big third periods and they’ve propelled us to wins, and I think we’re starting to find our groove a little bit here,” said Kane, who has six points (four goals, two assists) in the past three games. “We talked about it in the second intermission [that] we’ve got to create some energy, we’ve got to flick the switch, and I thought we did a pretty good job.”

SEA@EDM: Kane notches seventh NHL hat trick

Connor McDavid scored, Evan Bouchard had three assists and Draisaitl had two assists for the Oilers (5-9-1), who have won three in a row, including their first two under Knoblauch. Stuart Skinner made 32 saves.

“The season is never going to be easy and there is never going to be no adversity,” Knoblauch said. “The more things that you work and fight through and have success when it is all done, it is great for team building. The guys feel good and the next time you are in a difficult situation, they know they can handle it and that they can do this.

“Would I have liked us to win 5-0 because they played perfectly? Yes. But hopefully the way that we won today makes us a better team in the long run.”

Jared McCann, Pierre-Edouard Bellemare and Alex Wennberg scored, and Daccord made 27 saves for the Kraken (5-8-4), who have lost three straight (0-1-2) and five of six (1-3-2). They host the Islanders on Thursday.

“We got a point out of it,” Bellemare said. “I thought we worked for it and we have to learn how to manage that push at the end. We were leading by two and we knew they were going to come with a push, [but] we gave up two at a key time of the game.

“We need better touches in the [defensive] zone, better poise at times. We know they are forechecking, but I think a bit of communication would help -- not being too quiet in those moments and not being shy to make sure that everybody that is on the ice knows where the puck is supposed to go.”

SEA@EDM: McDavid opens scoring with backhand shot

McDavid gave Edmonton a 1-0 lead at 5:21 of the second period. Draisaitl skated with the puck from his own end into the offensive zone and fed McDavid, who scored on a backhand.

McCann tied it 1-1 at 7:20 when a rebound of Jordan Eberle’s shot went off his shin pad and past Skinner.

Bellemare gave Seattle a 2-1 lead at 9:24 on a redirection of Vince Dunn’s wrist shot from beyond the left face-off circle.

Wennberg made it 3-1 with his first goal of the season at 17:21, pouncing on a rebound in front after Skinner made an initial save against Eeli Tolvanen.

The Kraken outshot the Oilers 15-7 in the second. They finished 0-for-5 on the power play; Edmonton was 0-for-3.

“We played a [heck] of a hockey game,” Seattle coach Dave Hakstol said. “We played the way we exactly wanted to play on the road. Giving up the second one obviously gives them a little bit of juice and a little bit or momentum. We worked pretty hard all the way through the game today, and it all comes down to the tying goal.

“It’s disappointing without question because of how hard our players worked. It was a pretty solid road game that they played.”
