OTTAWA --Drake Batherson will be out months for the Ottawa Senators because of a high ankle sprain sustained on a hit from Buffalo Sabres goalie Aaron Dell on Tuesday.

Batherson was pursuing the puck behind the net late in the first period when Dell hit him. Batherson fell into the end boards awkwardly and twisted his ankle.
The forward was selected to play in the 2022 Honda NHL All-Star Game but will now be unable to do so.
"You're looking at a couple months, for sure. Maybe longer," Senators coach D.J. Smith said Thursday. "He's such a great kid. The first thing he said after the game, he wasn't talking about himself. I said, 'Tough break. Looks like you're not going to be able to go to the All-Star Game. It's terrible.' And the first thing he said was, 'But what a hat trick by [Tyler] Ennis.' He's just that kind of kid. You're going to miss that around the room, win, lose or draw. His attitude, he's coming around in the League, the way he can make plays, we're going to miss him in all areas."
Batherson had to be helped off the ice. Dell was not given a penalty but was suspended three games by the NHL Department of Player Safety on Wednesday.
"I was just trying to buy some time for my defenseman and step into [Batherson's] lane," Dell said. "I hope he's all right. I wasn't trying to hurt anybody."
Dell was assessed a minor penalty for interference on a similar play for the San Jose Sharks in an exhibition game against the Vegas Golden Knights on Sept. 29, 2019. Golden Knights forward Mark Stone was rounding the net when Dell hit him.
"It's a bad play by the goalie," Smith said after the game. "He's done it before, we've seen all the replays."
The All-Star Game, to be held at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Feb. 5, would have been the first for Batherson. The 23-year-old was replaced on the Atlantic Division by teammate Brady Tkachuk. Tkachuk scored 27 points (12 goals, 15 assists) in 33 games.
Batherson scored Tuesday and led the Senators with 34 points (13 goals, 21 assists) in 31 games. He tied his NHL career high in points, set last season in 56 games.
"I don't like calling out other goalies, but for me as a goalie, [the skaters] are not expecting to get hit by a goalie," Senators goalie Matt Murray said. "Just like when the goalie comes out to play the puck, you can't hit him. I just thought that's a dangerous play that turns out to be a really unfortunate result. One of our best players goes down. Just really unfortunate. That's all I've got to say about that."
