The tournament will be held in Helsinki and Tampere, Finland, from May 13-29.
Doan, the chief development officer for the Arizona Coyotes, will serve as general manager for Canada. He also was GM for Canada at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, was assistant GM for Canada when it won the 2021 World Championship and was a consultant for the 2019 Worlds. As a player he played in the Worlds six times (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009) and at the 2006 Torino Olympics.
"Last year at the World Championships was an incredible experience, having the ability to bring home the gold, and we want to do that again," Doan said. "Look forward to the opportunity to do it. Every time you wear the maple leaf, you get excited and there's an element of emotion and pride that goes with it. And I know when you call and talk to the NHL players, they're really excited to have the chance to do it this year."
Nash, director of player development for the Columbus Blue Jackets, will be assistant GM. It will be his first time in a management role for Hockey Canada. He played for Canada at the Olympics three times (2006, 2010, 2014), winning a gold medal at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and 2014 Sochi Olympics, and the World Championship four times (2005, 2007, 2008, 2011).
Claude Julien was named coach for Canada, with D.J. Smith of the Ottawa Senators and Andre Tourigny of the Arizona Coyotes named assistants.
Julien coached Canada to a sixth-place finish at the 2022 Olympics. The 2009 winner of the Jack Adams Award as NHL coach of the year, Julien is 16th in NHL history with 667 wins in 18 seasons with the Montreal Canadiens, New Jersey Devils and Boston Bruins. He helped the Bruins win the Stanley Cup in 2011 and reach the Final in 2013.
"We felt like we had a little bit of unfinished business [from the Olympics] with Claude and [Hockey Canada senior vice president of hockey operations Scott Salmond] and I and we want to win this thing," Doan said.
Smith, in his third season with the Senators, is 76-102-24. Ottawa is 28-40-7 this season and has been eliminated from contention for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Tourigny, in his first season as an NHL coach, is 22-48-5. The Coyotes have been eliminated from playoff contention.
Players for the team will be announced at a later date.
"I think we've got a lot of interest in some players wanting to join us," Julien said. "Our goal right now is to repeat what was done last year and that's to come back with a gold."
Canada won the 2021 World Championship with a 3-2 overtime victory against Finland in the championship game.
"We are excited to unveil the management group and coaching staff that will lead Canada's national men's team in its defense of last year's gold medal at the IIHF World Championship," Hockey Canada CEO Tom Renney said. "This is a group that combines many years of experience at the NHL, CHL [Canadian Hockey League] and international levels, and we look forward to building a team that will wear the maple leaf with pride in Finland next month."
