The San Jose Sharks marked the end of the Erik Karlsson era by sharing a tribute video in honor of the three-time Norris Trophy winning defenseman on Sunday.
The Sharks announced that Karlsson was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins in a three-team deal that also included the Montreal Canadiens. The video included some of his best moments with the team.
Karlsson played five seasons in San Jose after being traded by the Ottawa Senators during the 2018-19 season. His impact was felt immediately as he was the team's second-leading scorer in the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs, helping the Sharks to the Western Conference Final, where they lost to the eventual champion St. Louis Blues.
This past season, Karlsson became just the sixth defenseman in NHL history to reach the 100-point mark, joining Hockey Hall of Famers Bobby Orr, Paul Coffey, Denis Potvin, Al MacInnis and Brian Leetch on that list.
The 2023-24 NHL season begins on Oct. 10 as the Penguins will host the Chicago Blackhawks. Karlsson's first game back in San Jose with the Penguins is slated for Nov. 4.
