The Boston Bruins and Florida Panthers, the two teams where the late Jimmy Hayes played the majority of his NHL career, honored their former teammate before their game at TD Garden on Saturday.
Hayes, who last played for the New Jersey Devils during the 2017-18 season, died in August . Both teams wore special jerseys in honor of Hayes, who played 125 career games for the Panthers and 133 for the Bruins. The Bruins wore jerseys with "Hayesy" across the nameplates.
Before the game, the Bruins honored Hayes, who was born in nearby Dorchester, Massachusetts, with a moment of silence and a touching tribute video focusing on Hayes' life and career. The jerseys are set to be auctioned off to benefit a charity of the Hayes family's choosing.
Our Broadway jersey auction has opened ahead of tonight’s game in Boston.
Proceeds will benefit a charity chosen by the Hayes family, our club, and the Bruins. ❤️
