The puck marks on the dryer were created using food coloring, and the dryer even had actual dials made of fondant.
"I love the little details because those are the things that make people go, 'Wow,'" Austin said.
Austin, who created a Stanley Cup cake a year ago to celebrate the Penguins' championship, was asked again to come up with a design for a cake for the big 3-0 this year. Because of the milestone birthday, she knew she couldn't do the same design.
"It's kind of like, 'Been there done that,'" she said.
Austin discussed her challenge of creating a unique cake with her family while vacationing in Cape Breton, and her uncle Ron came up with the idea to make a cake of the dryer.
"The room went silent for a split second," Austin said after the idea was floated. "That's when I knew that would be the idea I would pitch. It made me warm and fuzzy, like a throwback to where it all began."
Photos of Austin's cake went viral Monday, and the internet was astounded by her incredible creation that took "so many hours," she said.
The warm reaction to her creation has left her overwhelmed.
"It is so ridiculously amazing -- all the shares, tweets and comments ... friends and family blowing up my phone with links," Austin said. "I am really thrilled that people thought it was a perfect cake for Sid."
There's no doubt Crosby, who is third in the NHL in assists (645) since he entered the League in 2005-06, shared his cake the same way he usually shares the puck.
