Welcome to the Stanley Cup Playoffs Buzz, a daily look at the races for the 2023 NHL postseason. There are 24 days left in the regular season and the races in each of the four divisions are tight. The top three teams in each of the four divisions and the next two highest-place finishers in each conference reach the playoffs.

There are two games on the NHL schedule Wednesday, each with playoff implications.
Pittsburgh Penguins at Colorado Avalanche (8 p.m. ET; TNT, SN, TVAS)
The Avalanche (41-22-6) will seek their seventh consecutive win and look to jump into a tie for first place in the Central Division with the Minnesota Wild (41-22-8) and Dallas Stars (38-19-14) with two games in hand. The Penguins (34-26-10) will try to stop a four-game losing streak and climb back into a wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference. They are one point behind the Florida Panthers for the second wild card with one game in hand.
Arizona Coyotes at Edmonton Oilers (10:30 p.m. ET; TNT, SN1, SNW, TVAS)
The Oilers (40-23-8), going for their fifth straight win, are third in the Pacific Division, four points behind the Los Angeles Kings, with center Connor McDavid two goals from 60 this season. The Coyotes (27-33-11) are 6-2-2 in their past 10 games and 18 points behind the Seattle Kraken for the second wild card from the Western Conference.

Carolina Hurricanes 3, New York Rangers 2:Teuvo Teravainen scored with 2:33 remaining in the third period to give the Hurricanes (46-15-8) the win and increase their Metropolitan Division lead to two points over the second-place New Jersey Devils (45-18-8), who have played two more games. Tyler Motte and Kaapo Kakko scored for the Rangers (41-20-10), whose winning streak ended at four and point streak at seven (6-0-1). The Rangers are third in the division, six points behind the Devils.
Columbus Blue Jackets 7, Washington Capitals 6 (OT): Alex Ovechkin scored his 40th goal of the season, but the Capitals (33-31-8) fell to 1-3-1 in their past five games and are five points behind the Panthers, who have one game in hand, for the second wild card in the East. The Blue Jackets (22-41-7) have been eliminated from playoff contention.
Philadelphia Flyers 6, Florida Panthers 3:Matthew Tkachuk scored for the fifth straight game, but Panthers (36-28-7) had their point streak end at seven games. They are one point ahead of the Penguins for the second wild card in the East and three behind the New York Islanders for the first. The Flyers (26-32-12) won for the second time in seven games (2-4-1). Carter Hart made 41 saves, 15 in the third period.
Minnesota Wild 2, New Jersey Devils 1 (OT): The Wild tied the Stars for first in the Central Division after Matt Boldy scored with 1.3 seconds left in overtime. New Jersey (45-18-8) is 4-2-2 in its past eight games and two points behind Carolina, which has two games in hand, for first in the Metropolitan Division.
Nashville Predators 7, Buffalo Sabres 3: Matt Duchene had two goals and an assist to help the Predators (35-26-8) end a three-game skid (0-2-1) and remain five points behind the Winnipeg Jets for the second wild card from the West. Dylan Cozens and Tage Thompson scored for the Sabres (33-31-6), who have lost four straight (0-3-1) and 10 of 12 (2-8-2), and are seven points behind the Panthers for the second wild card from the East.
Boston Bruins 2, Ottawa Senators 1: Linus Ullmark made 40 saves to help the Bruins (54-11-5) to their fourth straight victory and extend their Atlantic Division lead over the Toronto Maple Leafs to 20 points. Boston is eight wins from matching the NHL record of 62, held by the 1995-96 Detroit Red Wings (62-13-7) and 2018-19 Tampa Bay Lightning (62-16-4). Dylan Gambrell scored for the Senators (34-32-5), who are 1-5-1 in their past seven and six points behind the Florida Panthers for the second wild card from the East.
Montreal Canadiens 3, Tampa Bay Lightning 2: Brayden Point and Pat Maroon scored, and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 17 saves for the Lightning (42-24-6), who stayed three points behind the Maple Leafs for second in the Atlantic Division. Kirby Dach scored in his first game since Feb. 14, Nick Suzuki had two assists, and Sam Montembeault made 31 saves for the Canadiens (28-37-6), who trail the Panthers by 17 points.
New York Islanders 7, Toronto Maple Leafs 2:New York (37-27-8) moved three points ahead of Florida for the first wild card from the East. Cal Clutterbuck had two goals and an assist for the Islanders, who have won three in a row and are 7-2-1 in their past 10 games. Mitchell Marner and Sam Lafferty scored for the Maple Leafs (42-19-9) and have two games in hand on the Lightning.
Winnipeg Jets 2, Arizona Coyotes 1: The Jets (40-29-3) moved within five points of the Avalanche for third in the Central Division and remained two points behind the Seattle Kraken for the first wild card from the West. Nikolaj Ehlers and Adam Lowry scored for Winnipeg, and Connor Hellebuyck made 29 saves, 17 in the second period. Barrett Hayton scored for the Coyotes to extend his point streak to eight games (five goals, eight assists).
Seattle Kraken 5, Dallas Stars 4 (OT):The Stars fell into a first-place tie with the Wild despite getting a goal and two assists from forward Jamie Benn. Brandon Tanev had two goals and an assist for the Kraken (39-24-7), who moved within three points of the Oilers for third in the Pacific.
Calgary Flames 5, Anaheim Ducks 1:The Flames (32-25-15) stayed four points behind the Jets for the second wild card from the West. Tyler Toffoli tied his NHL career high with three assists for the Flames, who are 1-1-2 in their past four games. Frank Vatrano scored, and John Gibson made 38 saves for the Ducks (23-38-10), who have lost four of five and have been eliminated from playoff contention.
Vegas Golden Knights 4, Vancouver Canucks 3:The Golden Knights (44-21-6) moved two points ahead of the Los Angeles Kings (41-20-10) for first in the Pacific Division with their sixth win in seven games. Jonathan Quick took sole possession of second place for NHL wins among United States-born goalies with 375, passing John Vanbiesbrouck (374). He is 5-1-0 since being acquired in a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets on March 2. J.T. Miller scored one of his two goals on a penalty shot and had an assist for the Canucks (31-34-5), who are 7-3-0 in their past 10 games.
