Super 16: Avalanche remain No. 1, Golden Knights return to power rankings

The Vegas Golden Knights are back in the Super 16 power rankings after dropping out five weeks ago.

They barely made it in this week at No. 16, finishing with one more voting point than the Los Angeles Kings, who were No. 15 last week.
Vegas has won six of its past eight games (6-1-1).
The Calgary Flames made the biggest jump, climbing three spots to No. 4. They've won five in a row while outscoring opponents 20-10.
The Colorado Avalanche are No. 1 for the 12th straight week.
To create the NHL.com power rankings, each of the 14 participating staff members puts together his or her version of what they think the Super 16 should look like. Those are submitted and a point total assigned to each.
The team that is selected first is given 16 points, second gets 15, third 14, fourth 13 and so on down to No. 16, who gets one point.
Here is the Super 16:

1. Colorado Avalanche (53-14-6)

Total points: 223
Last week: No. 1
The Avalanche won six straight games, four by one goal, before their 9-3 victory against the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday. They are 12-1-1 since March 13. Colorado is 18-1-6 in games decided by one goal.

2. Florida Panthers (52-15-6)

Total points: 211
Last week: No. 2
The Panthers have won eight straight games, the longest active winning streak in the NHL. They lead the NHL in wins (17), points (35), points percentage (.875), goals (86) and shots on goal per game (39.2) since March 1.

3. Carolina Hurricanes (48-18-8)

Total points: 196
Last week: No. 3
The Hurricanes have won two in a row and three of four but are 0-for-14 on the power play in their past six and 1-for-24 in their past nine.

4. Calgary Flames (45-19-9)

Total points: 165
Last week: No. 7
Johnny Gaudreau has scored 101 points (34 goals, 67 assists), the 10th time a Flames player reached the milestone in one season and first since Theo Fleury had 100 in 1992-93.

5. Toronto Maple Leafs (47-20-6)

Total points: 164
Last week: No. 4
The Maple Leafs had an eight-game point streak (7-0-1) end with a 5-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday. Oddly, they've struggled the most with the Sabres this season, going 1-3-0 with three straight losses since March 2 by a combined 15-5.

6. New York Rangers (48-21-6)

Total points: 158
Last week: No. 6
The Rangers are 8-2-1 in their past 11 games following a 4-0 win at the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday. Their three-game winning streak and four-game point streak ended with a 4-2 loss to the Hurricanes on Tuesday, when left wing Chris Kreider became a 50-goal scorer in the NHL for the first time.

7. Tampa Bay Lightning (44-21-8)

Total points: 136
Last week: No. 5
The Lightning are 1-3-2 since a four-game winning streak from March 26-April 1. They are 1-9-1 in 11 games since March 3 against teams that have either clinched a berth in the Stanley Cup Playoffs or are in position to do so.

8. Minnesota Wild (45-21-6)

Total points: 129
Last week: No. 9
The Wild have scored at least three goals in 13 of 14 games since March 16, going 11-1-2. They scored 11 goals in wins against the Los Angeles Kings (6-3) and Edmonton Oilers (5-1).

9. St. Louis Blues (43-20-10)

Total points: 121
Last week: No. 11
The Blues are on a six-game winning streak and have points in nine straight (8-0-1). They have outscored opponents 42-22 without allowing a power-play goal, going 14-for-14 with two shorthanded goals in the nine-game point streak. St. Louis has defeated Calgary, Minnesota and the Boston Bruins during the winning streak.

10. Boston Bruins (45-23-5)

Total points: 100
Last week: No. 8
The Bruins have lost three of their past four games, all in regulation, allowing at least four goals in each (5-2 to the Detroit Red Wings, 4-2 to the Washington Capitals and 4-2 to the Blues). They are 0-for-18 on the power play in their past five games.

11. Pittsburgh Penguins (42-22-11)

Total points: 82
Last week: No. 10
The Penguins have not won in regulation since March 27. They are 2-5-1 with overtime wins against the Wild and Nashville Predators, and four straight regulation losses to the Avalanche twice, the Rangers and Capitals. Pittsburgh is 1-for-15 on the power play in its past six games.

12. Washington Capitals (41-22-10)

Total points: 71
Last week: No. 14
The Capitals have won four in a row, scoring 23 goals including a 9-2 win against the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday. The key is the first three wins came against the Lightning, Penguins and Bruins, who are all higher in the standings than Washington. The Capitals are 13-4-1 since losing three in a row to the Rangers, Flyers and Maple Leafs from Feb. 25-28.

13. Edmonton Oilers (42-26-6)

Total points: 50
Last week: No. 12
The Oilers had a seven-game point streak (6-0-1) end with a 5-1 loss to the Wild on Tuesday. They are 26-for-28 on the penalty kill (92.9 percent) with two shorthanded goals in their past 10 games, going 7-2-1.

14. Nashville Predators (42-26-5)

Total points: 42
Last week: No. 13
The Predators have not won more than two games in a row since winning three straight from March 5-10. But they are 9-6-1 in 16 games since the three-game winning streak, including 5-2-1 in their past eight. Forward Ryan Johansen has scored six goals in his past five games, including the overtime goal in a 1-0 win against the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday.

15. Dallas Stars (42-27-4)

Total points: 32
Last week: No. 16
Roope Hintz has scored goals in back-to-back games, including the lone goal in a 1-0 win against the Lightning on Tuesday. The forward has scored 32 goals this season. The Stars are 10-4-1 since March 17.

16. Vegas Golden Knights (40-29-5)

Total points: 12
Last week: NR
Jack Eichel has points in five straight games (four goals, two assists) and seven of his past eight (six goals, three assists). The forward scored 11 points (five goals, six assists) in his first 18 games this season from Feb. 16-March 22.
