Super 16: Blackhawks make first appearance in power rankings

The red-hot Tampa Bay Lightning claimed the top spot in the NHL.com Super 16 power rankings for the second straight week and the third time in the first four weeks of the season.

The Lightning have won six straight games, the longest active winning streak in the NHL, and were ranked first by 12 of the 14 participating staff members.
The Boston Bruins moved up three spots to No. 2 and the Toronto Maple Leafs climbed four spots to No. 4. The Vegas Golden Knights stayed between them at No. 3.
The Montreal Canadiens dropped three spots to No. 5, the Washington Capitals moved down four to No. 8, and the Dallas Stars fell six spots to No. 12.
The Chicago Blackhawks (No. 15) are ranked for the first time this season, and the Columbus Blue Jackets (No. 16) are in for the first time since being ranked there in the preseason Super 16 of Jan. 12.
To create the Super 16, each of the 14 participating staff members put together his or her version of what they think it should look like. Those were submitted and a point total assigned to each.
The team that was selected first was given 16 points, second got 15, third got 14, and so on down to No. 16, who got one point.

1. Tampa Bay Lightning (9-1-1)Total points:221

The Lightning have outscored opponents 27-9 during the winning streak (4.50 goals per game, 1.50 goals against per game). Their power play is scoring at 26.9 percent (7-for-26) and their penalty kill is successful at 86.4 percent (19-for-22) during the streak.
2. Boston Bruins (9-1-2)Total points:198

The Bruins have arguably the best combination of special teams this season: They are sixth on the power play (31.6 percent) and second on the penalty kill (88.4 percent). Boston allowed a power-play goal in four of its 12 games and scored at least one in seven.

3. Vegas Golden Knights (8-1-1)Total points:190
Last week:No. 3
Marc-Andre Fleury is 5-0-0 with a 1.80 goals-against average, .920 save percentage and one shutout. He's the only goalie in the NHL with at least five starts and zero losses. The Golden Knights are 7-0-1 at home.
4. Toronto Maple Leafs (11-2-1)Total points:180

Auston Matthews leads the NHL with 11 goals; he had an eight-game goal streak end in a 4-2 win against the Canadiens on Wednesday. Toronto had a streak of seven games scoring at least one power-play goal end in a 3-1 win against the Vancouver Canucks on Monday. They were 9-for-23 (39.1 percent) during the streak.

5. Montreal Canadiens (8-3-2)Total points:173

Jake Allen is 4-1-0 with a 1.81 GAA and .940 save percentage in five starts backing up Carey Price. Montreal leads the NHL with 36 goals in the first two periods: 17 in the first and 20 in the second.
6. Colorado Avalanche (7-3-1)Total points:151
Last week: No. 7
The Avalanche haven't played since Feb. 2, with five games postponed due to NHL COVID-19 protocol. They are scheduled to play at the Golden Knights on Sunday.
7. Philadelphia Flyers (8-3-2)Total points:119
Last week:No. 10
James van Riemsdyk has a seven-game point streak (four goals, nine assists) and 18 points (seven goals, 11 assists) in 13 games this season. It took the forward 35 games to score 18 points last season, when he finished with 40 points (19 goals, 21 assists) in 66 games.

8. Washington Capitals (6-3-3)Total points: 115

The Capitals have lost three straight games after starting the season with a nine-game point streak (6-0-3). They are 11-for-11 on the penalty kill in the losing streak, and had a multiple-goal lead in the first period in two of the three games.
9. Florida Panthers (7-1-2)Total points: 107
Last week: No. 12
Jonathan Huberdeau needs one assist to become the first player with 300 for the Panthers. The forward has 10 this season after getting two in a 2-1 win against the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday. Huberdeau leads Florida with 14 points.

10. St. Louis Blues (7-4-2)Total points:96

The Blues are four games into a stretch of seven consecutive against the Arizona Coyotes because of postponements of four other games and the rescheduling of one. St. Louis has lost the past three against Arizona after winning 4-3 on Feb. 2;. all four games were at home. The stretch resumes Friday with the first of three games in four days at Arizona.
11. Carolina Hurricanes (7-3-0)Total points: 95
Last week: No. 11
Jordan Staal has scored nine points (two goals, seven assists) in his past seven games and the center needs two to reach 300 with the Hurricanes. Goalie James Reimer has allowed five goals in each of his past two starts, and Carolina has allowed at least three goals in five straight games.
12. Dallas Stars (5-2-3)Total points: 89
Last week:No. 6
The Stars have one win in their past six games (1-2-3) after starting the season with a four-game winning streak. Anton Khudobin is 0-2-1 and has allowed 11 goals on 81 shots for a 4.31 GAA and .864 save percentage in his past three starts. Jake Oettinger started three of the past four games and was 1-0-2 with a 2.27 GAA and .922 save percentage (seven goals against on 90 shots).
13. Winnipeg Jets (7-4-1)Total points: 68

The Jets had a streak of 14 straight successful penalty kills end in a 3-2 loss to the Calgary Flames on Tuesday, when center Pierre-Luc Dubois made his debut. Nikolaj Ehlers scored both goals in the loss, giving him a Jets-high eight this season.

14. New York Islanders (5-4-2)Total points: 24

The Islanders have won two games in a row and have a four-game point streak (2-0-2) since losing three in a row from Jan. 24-28. They have been on the penalty kill three or fewer times in nine of their 11 games, including two or fewer in five.
15. Chicago Blackhawks (6-4-4)Total points:21

The Blackhawks have won three games in a row, have a point in five straight (4-0-1), and are 6-1-4 since starting the season with three straight losses. Chicago has killed 13 consecutive penalties, 21 of 22 (95.5 percent) in eight games since Jan. 26, and has scored at least one power-play goal in 12 of its 14 games (35.6 percent).
16. Columbus Blue Jackets (6-5-3)Total points:13

The Blue Jackets are 5-1-3 in one-goal games but 1-3-0 in games decided by at least two goals. The one-goal games have a lot to do with their wild swings in the first two periods. They have outscored opponents 16-8 in the first period but have been outscored 19-7 in the second period. They're even at 15-15 in the third period but have lost two games in overtime. Jack Roslovic has scored seven points (two goals, five assists) in seven games since arriving in the Dubois trade with Winnipeg.
