Super 16: Lightning at No. 1 for first time since preseason

The Tampa Bay Lightning, the top-ranked team in the preseason Super 16, are No. 1 in NHL.com's weekly power rankings for the first time since the regular season began.

The Lightning, winners of eight straight and 20 of their past 23 games (20-2-1), move up two spots to take over No. 1 this week. They dropped out of the rankings as recently as Dec. 25 but got back in the following week and have been surging ever since.
The Washington Capitals are No. 3 after a three-week run at No. 1.
It's the third straight week the same 16 teams have appeared in the rankings.

To create the power rankings, each of the 13 participating staff members puts together his or her version of what the Super 16 should look like. Those are submitted and a point total is assigned to each.
The team picked first is given 16 points, second gets 15, third gets 14 and so on down to No. 16, which gets one point.
Here is the latest Super 16:

1. Tampa Bay Lightning (37-15-5)

Total points: 205
Last week:No. 3
Hit: The Lightning have a plus-42 goal differential since Dec. 23 (84-42).
Miss: Forwards Nikita Kucherov and Anthony Cirelli each sustained a lower-body injury in a 2-1 overtime win against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday. Defenseman Ryan McDonagh has missed three games, and forward Steven Stamkos didn't play in the past two, each because of a lower-body injury.

2. Boston Bruins (35-11-12)

Total points: 191
Last week:No. 2
Hit: Tuukka Rask is 8-1-1 with a 1.70 goals-against average and .946 save percentage in 11 starts since Dec. 23.
Miss:The Bruins have lost their past five games against the Detroit Red Wings, including four straight in regulation. They play them Saturday and again March 24.

3. Washington Capitals (36-15-5)

Total points:178
Last week:No. 1
Hit: John Carlson has 22 multipoint games this season, eight more than the next defenseman (Roman Josi of the Nashville Predators). Carlson has 67 points (15 goals, 52 assists) in 56 games, putting him on a 98-point pace.
Miss: The Capitals have lost two in a row in regulation, outscored 12-5, and forward Alex Ovechkin didn't score in either game, leaving him with 698 NHL goals. His next chance to get to 700 is at the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday.

4. Pittsburgh Penguins (34-15-6)

Total points:168
Last week: No. 4
Hit: Evgeni Malkin has eight points (three goals, five assists) in a five-game point streak. The center scored Pittsburgh's only goal in its overtime loss to the Lightning on Tuesday.
Miss: Defenseman John Marino will be out 3-6 weeks following surgery to repair facial bone fractures.

5. St. Louis Blues (32-15-9)

Total points: 155
Last week:No. 5
Hit: The Blues power play is 13-for-44 (29.5 percent) since Jan. 2, third in the NHL in that span.
Miss: They are 2-5-2 with a minus-10 goal differential since Jan. 15 (36-26).

6. Colorado Avalanche (33-16-6)

Total points:153
Last week:No. 7
Hit: The Avalanche have won five in a row. They're 8-1-0, averaging 4.00 goals per game with a plus-19 goal differential since Jan. 16 (36-17).
Miss: Nazem Kadri is out indefinitely because of a lower-body injury. The center had 36 points (19 goals, 17 assists) in 51 games.

7. Dallas Stars (32-19-5)

Total points:114
Last week: No. 8
Hit: Forward Jamie Benn has four goals in his past two games, including a hat trick for the forward in a 4-1 win against the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday. Dallas is 5-2-1 since Jan. 27, including 7-for-21 on the power play (33.3 percent) in their past five games.
Miss:Tyler Seguin has no goals on a Stars-high 62 shots on goal in 17 games since Dec. 29. The center is minus-5 in that time.

8. New York Islanders (33-16-6)

Total points: 111
Last week:No. 9
Hit:The Islanders have won two straight and five of their past seven games. They are 7-0-3 this season at Barclays Center, where they have a point in 15 of 16 games (12-1-3) since Jan. 13, 2019. They have three more games there this season and nine at Nassau Coliseum.
Miss: Center Casey Cizikas will be out 3-4 weeks with a laceration on his left leg, sustained in a 5-3 win against the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday.

9. Columbus Blue Jackets (30-17-10)

Total points: 99
Last week:No. 6
Hit: The Blue Jackets have allowed an NHL-low 47 goals in 28 games, an average of 1.68 per game, since Dec. 9. They have allowed 18 fewer goals than next team, the Lightning.
Miss:Seth Jones will be out 8-10 weeks with an ankle injury. The defenseman has 30 points (six goals, 24 assists) in 56 games. He leads the Blue Jackets in ice time at 25:17 per game. Forward Cam Atkinson will be out 2-3 weeks with a sprained ankle.

10. Vancouver Canucks (32-21-5)

Total points:85
Last week: No. 10
Hit: Defenseman Quinn Hughes has 17 points (five goals, 12 assists) in his past 19 games, including five assists in his past four games. He was first among NHL rookies with 44 points (eight goals, 36 assists).
Miss: The Canucks had allowed at least one power-play goal in four straight games, going 12-for-17 (70.6 percent) on the penalty kill before shutting out the Chicago Blackhawks 3-0 on Wednesday. They lost three of the four games.

11. Philadelphia Flyers (31-19-7)

Total points: 76
Last week: No. 11
Hit:The Flyers are 19-5-4 as the home team this season, already equaling their home wins of last season (19-18-4). If they stay at their pace for the final 13 home games, they will finish with a .750 points percentage as the home team, their best since 1986-87, when they were 29-9-2 at home, a .750 points percentage in a 40-game home schedule.
Miss: Shayne Gostisbehere remains one point from his 200th in the NHL, but the defenseman has missed three straight games and 13 of the past 14 because of a knee injury.

12. Toronto Maple Leafs (30-19-8)

Total points:63
Last week:No. 15
Hit: Jack Campbell is 2-0-1 with a .918 save percentage (eight goals on 97 shots) and a 2.52 GAA in three starts since the Maple Leafs acquired the goalie in a trade with the Los Angeles Kings on Feb. 5.
Miss: Frederik Andersen has missed four games with a neck injury, but the Maple Leafs' No. 1 goalie has been skating and is close to returning. He could play against Dallas on Thursday.

13. Edmonton Oilers (30-20-6)

Total points:54
Last week: No. 13
Hit: Kailer Yamamoto has 14 points (seven goals, seven assists) and is plus-12 in 15 games since he was recalled from Bakersfield of the American Hockey League on Dec. 29. The forward, who has at least one point in 11 of those games, had two goals in a 5-3 win against the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday.
Miss: Connor McDavid will be out 2-3 weeks with a quad injury. The center and Edmonton captain missed his first game Tuesday.

14. Carolina Hurricanes (32-21-3)

Total points:49
Last week: No. 14
Hit: Sebastian Aho has seven goals in a six-game streak. The center scored his 31st goal in a 4-1 loss to Dallas on Tuesday, breaking his previous NHL career high of 30, set in 82 games last season. Aho has played 56 games this season.
Miss: Goalies James Reimer and Petr Mrazek have combined to allow 24 goals in the past six games. Reimer is 3-0-0 despite allowing 11 goals on 106 shots (.896 save percentage), and Mrazek, 0-3-0, has allowed 13 on 99 shots (.869).

15. Florida Panthers (30-20-6)

Hit: Noel Acciari's goal in a 5-3 win at the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday was his 19th in 53 games this season, one more than he scored in his first 180 NHL games through four seasons with the Bruins. The center leads the Panthers with 18 even-strength goals.
Miss: Florida has not gone consecutive games allowing two or fewer goals since doing so in three straight games from Dec. 7-10. Since that streak, the Panthers have allowed 87 goals in 26 games, tied for the fourth most goals against in the NHL in that span. They have allowed 17 goals in their past four games.

16. Calgary Flames (29-23-6)

Hit: The Flames are 12-4-1 on the road since Nov. 23 after a 5-3 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday. They are 7-3-0 on the road since Dec. 27.
Miss: Calgary is 0-3-1 at home since Jan. 28 and 13-10-4 at home this season, tied with the Arizona Coyotes for the fewest home wins among the 16 teams in position to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
