Super 16: Bruins new No. 1, Islanders enter top 10

The Boston Bruins are the new No. 1 in the weekly NHL.com Super 16 power rankings, replacing the Tampa Bay Lightning, who dropped to No. 2.

The Bruins, No. 1 for the first time this season, had a five-game winning streak and a 10-game point streak end with a 4-2 loss to the New York Islanders on Monday. Boston is tied for second in the NHL with the Vegas Golden Knights in goals-against per game (2.14), eighth on the power play (27.3 percent), second on the penalty kill (88.0 percent), and first in face-off percentage (57.8 percent).
The Islanders moved up four spots to No. 10 with a three-game winning streak and eight-game point streak (5-0-3).
The Florida Panthers defeated the Lightning twice in three games during the past week and rose three spots to No. 6. The Carolina Hurricanes advanced four spots to No. 7.
To create the Super 16, each of the 14 participating staff members put together his or her version of what they think it should look like. Those were submitted and a point total assigned to each.
The team that was selected first was given 16 points, second got 15, third 14, and so on down to No. 16, which got one point.

1. Boston Bruins (10-2-2)Total points: 210

Brad Marchand's next goal will be his 300th in the NHL. He'll become the seventh player to score at least 300 with the Bruins, joining Johnny Bucyk (545), Phil Esposito (459), Rick Middleton (402), Ray Bourque (395), Patrice Bergeron (359) and Cam Neely (344). The left wing leads Boston with nine this season.

2. Tampa Bay Lightning (10-3-1)Total points:205

Alexander Volkov has scored three goals in his past two games after the forward scored none in his first 16 NHL games. The Lightning have played nine games when at least one team has scored as many as five goals (6-3-0). Center Anthony Cirelli has missed two games and is week to week with an upper-body injury.
3. Vegas Golden Knights (10-3-1)Total points: 201

Marc-Andre Fleury has started five straight games (3-2-0, 1.81 goals-against average, .931 save percentage, one shutout). The Golden Knights have scored six goals (two at even strength, four on the power play) and are 9-for-9 on the penalty kill in their past four games.
4. Toronto Maple Leafs (12-3-2)Total points:164

Auston Matthews has scored 14 goals in his past 16 games and 172 goals in 299 NHL games. The center has scored five game-winning goals this season.

5. Colorado Avalanche (8-4-1)Total points:152

The Avalanche have scored first in 10 of their 13 games (7-2-1). They are 93.3 percent on the penalty kill (28-for-30) in nine games since Jan. 22, but 14.3 percent (5-for-35) on the power play in the same span, including 0-for-11 in their past four games.
6. Florida Panthers (10-2-2)Total points:148

The Panthers are 5-0-1 on the road with center Aleksander Barkov scoring seven points (three goals, four assists). They are 4-0-0 with 13 goals in games after a loss.
7. Carolina Hurricanes (10-3-1)Total points: 142

Jordan Staal has scored in four straight games (five goals) and five of his past six. The center has scored seven goals in 13 games this season after he scored eight in 68 games last season.
8. Montreal Canadiens (9-4-2)Total points: 134
Last week:No. 5
Goalies Carey Price and Jake Allen have combined to allow no more than three goals in 12 straight games. The Canadiens are 2-for-22 on the power play in their past eight. They did not have an opportunity on the man-advantage in a 2-1 win against the Maple Leafs on Saturday.
9. Philadelphia Flyers (8-3-2)Total points: 113

The Flyers returned to practice Tuesday and are expected to play the New York Rangers in Philadelphia on Thursday, their first game since Feb. 7 because of a pause to comply with NHL COVID-19 protocols.
10. New York Islanders (8-4-3)Total points:87

The Islanders have allowed three goals in their three-game winning streak. They have four shutouts, including 3-0 against the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday, the first NHL shutout for goalie Ilya Sorokin, who made 20 saves. Forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau has scored in four straight games (five goals) after scoring once in his first 11.

11. St. Louis Blues (9-5-2)Total points:85

The Blues are 9-for-9 on the penalty kill in their past three games. Goalie Jordan Binnington has allowed two goals on 44 shots in his past two starts, including a 1-0 loss to the Arizona Coyotes on Monday. Torey Krug is available against the San Jose Sharks on Thursday after the defenseman did not play in the third period Monday because of an upper-body injury.
12. Winnipeg Jets (9-6-1)Total points: 81

Mark Scheifele has scored 12 points (five goals, seven assists) in an eight-game point streak. The center also had a five-game point streak from Jan. 19-26 (nine points; two goals, seven assists) and has scored a point in 14 of the 17 games.
13. Washington Capitals (7-4-3)Total points: 75

Nicklas Backstrom's assist in a 3-1 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday was his 696th in the NHL. The center needs four to become the third active player with at least 700 (Joe Thornton, 1,091; Sidney Crosby, 808; Anaheim Ducks center Ryan Getzlaf also has 696 assists), and the fifth Sweden-born player with at least that many, joining Nicklas Lidstrom (878), Henrik Sedin (830), Mats Sundin (785) and Daniel Alfredsson (713).
14. Chicago Blackhawks (9-5-4)Total points: 41

Patrick Kane has scored at least two points in five of Chicago's past 10 games. The right wing is four goals from 400, which would make him the fourth player to score that many with the Blackhawks, joining Bobby Hull (604), Stan Mikita (541) and Steve Larmer (406).

The Stars have lost five straight games (0-2-3) and have allowed a power-play goal in four in a row. They had three games postponed this week, two against the Nashville Predators and one against the Lightning, because of weather-related problems in the Dallas area. Rookie forward Jason Robertson has a four-game point streak (two goals, three assists).
16. New Jersey Devils (5-3-2)Total points: 9

Mackenzie Blackwood is 3-0-1 with a 1.92 GAA and .948 save percentage in four starts this season. The goalie made 37 saves in a 5-2 win at the Rangers on Tuesday, the Devils' first game since Jan. 31 because of a pause to comply with NHL COVID-19 protocols.
