Super 16: Avalanche ride hot streak to No. 1; Stars enter rankings

The Colorado Avalanche are No. 1 in the NHL.com Super 16 power rankings this week, knocking out the Carolina Hurricanes, who held the top spot last week.

The Hurricanes are No. 2, ahead of the Florida Panthers, who are up from No. 4. The Tampa Bay Lightning round out the top four, which has been the same four teams for three straight weeks.
The Dallas Stars move into the rankings this week thanks to their four-game winning streak, knocking out the Winnipeg Jets.
To create the power rankings, each of the 13 participating staff members puts together his or her version of what they think the Super 16 should look like. Those are submitted and a point total assigned to each.
The team that is selected first is given 16 points, second gets 15, third 14, fourth 13 and so on down to No. 16, which gets one point.
Here is the Super 16:

1. Colorado Avalanche (30-8-3)

Total points: 200
Last week: No. 2
The Avalanche are 19-4-1 against the Western Conference. They have won eight games in a row and have a point in 14 straight (13-0-1) and in 21 of 22 (19-1-2) since Dec. 1.

2. Carolina Hurricanes (28-9-2)

Total points: 191
Last week: No. 1
Andrei Svechnikov has scored two points in five straight games and in seven of nine. The forward has scored 10 points (two goals, eight assists) in his five-game point streak.

3. Florida Panthers (29-9-5)

Total points: 182
Last week: No. 4
Anton Lundell has scored eight points (three goals, five assists) in his past eight games. The 20-year-old rookie forward has scored 26 points (10 goals, 16 assists), with all of the goals at even strength.

4. Tampa Bay Lightning (28-10-5)

Total points: 175
Last week: No. 3
Ross Colton has scored four goals in his past four games, including two in a 7-1 win against the San Jose Sharks on Saturday. The forward has scored 19 points (eight goals, 11 assists) in 40 games. The Lightning have won seven of nine since Jan. 4.

5. Pittsburgh Penguins (27-10-5)

Total points: 158
Last week: No. 6
The Penguins have won six straight games and are 17-2-0 since Dec. 4 with a plus-34 goal differential (79-45). Sidney Crosby has scored 26 points (nine goals, 17 assists) and is plus-19 in the 19 games.

6. New York Rangers (28-11-4)

Total points: 134
Last week: No. 7
Chris Kreider has scored nine goals in his active six-game goal scoring streak to give him an NHL-high 30 this season, including 15 on the power play, also the most in the NHL.

7. Toronto Maple Leafs (26-10-3)

Total points: 122
Last week: No. 5
Mitchell Marner has scored in four straight games. Defenseman Jake Muzzin has missed three games with a concussion.

8. St. Louis Blues (25-12-5)

Total points: 102
Last week: No. 9
Ville Husso is 5-0-0 with a 1.13 goals-against average and .963 save percentage in six games since Jan. 7. Jordan Binnington is 3-4-0 with a 4.44 GAA and .878 save percentage in seven games since Dec. 19 and has allowed 13 goals on 75 shots in his past two games.

9. Minnesota Wild (25-10-3)

Total points: 99
Last week: No. 10
The Wild are 10-0-1 at Xcel Energy Center since Nov. 18. Their only home loss in that span was against the Buffalo Sabres on Dec. 16 (3-2 in a shootout). They are 6-0-1 with 15 goal scorers in seven games since a 6-4 loss to the Blues in the 2022 Discover NHL Winter Classic on Jan. 1.

10. Washington Capitals (23-12-9)

Total points: 90

The Capitals are 6-6-9 in one-goal games, a .286 winning percentage that is 30th in the NHL.

11. Nashville Predators (27-14-3)

Total points: 86
Last week: No. 12
Filip Forsberg has scored 10 goals in 12 games since Dec. 16. The forward has scored 21 goals this season and 199 in the NHL. The Predators have won three games in a row.

12. Boston Bruins (24-13-3)

Total points: 74
Last week: No. 11
The Bruins have scored at least one power-play goal in seven straight games (9-for-21; 42.9 percent).

13. Vegas Golden Knights (25-15-3)

Total points: 72
Last week: No. 13
The Golden Knights are 12-6-1 without forward Mark Stone this season, including 10-6-1 without Stone and forward Max Pacioretty. Stone returned after missing two games for a 4-3 overtime loss against the Hurricanes on Tuesday. Pacioretty remains out since having wrist surgery Dec. 30.

14. Calgary Flames (20-12-6)

Matthew Tkachuk has scored 15 points (six goals, nine assists) in a six-game point streak and a Calgary-high 22 points (nine goals, 13 assists) in 11 games since Dec. 11.

Joe Pavelski has scored 13 points (four goals, nine assists) in a six-game point streak. The 37-year-old forward leads the Stars with 48 points (19 goals, 29 assists) in 40 games.

16. Los Angeles Kings (21-16-6)

Drew Doughty is expected to play in his 1,000th NHL game when the Kings play at the New York on Thursday. The defenseman has played his entire NHL career with Los Angeles and will be the first player selected in the 2008 NHL Draft (No. 2) to play 1,000 games.
