Super 16: Avalanche No. 1, Rangers move into top five of power rankings

The New York Rangers have moved into the top five of the NHL.com Super 16 power rankings for the first time in almost three months.

The Rangers are No. 5 this week; they were No. 4 on Jan. 6. New York was as high as No. 2 on Dec. 9.
The Pittsburgh Penguins fell two spots to No. 7.
The same 16 teams are ranked for a third consecutive week, with the Colorado Avalanche at No. 1 for a 10th straight week.
To create the NHL.com power rankings, each of the 14 participating staff members puts together his or her version of what they think the Super 16 should look like. Those are submitted and a point total assigned to each.
The team that is selected first is given 16 points, second gets 15, third 14, fourth 13 and so on down to No. 16, which gets one point.
Here is the Super 16:

1. Colorado Avalanche (47-14-6)

Total points: 223Last week: No. 1
The Avalanche scored at least one power-play goal in eight straight games since March 13 (11-for-24, 45.8 percent). They're 6-1-1 in those games.

2. Florida Panthers (45-15-6)

Total points: 209Last week: No. 2
The Panthers scored at least three goals in 32 of 37 games since Dec. 29 and are 26-5-1. Their 268 goals lead the NHL and are a single-season Florida record.

3. Carolina Hurricanes (44-15-8)

Total points: 193Last week: No. 3
The Hurricanes have a five-game point streak against teams in a Stanley Cup Playoff position (3-0-2): a 3-2 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning, a 4-3 shootout loss to the Dallas Stars, a 7-2 win against the St. Louis Blues, a 6-1 win against the Washington Capitals, and a 4-3 overtime loss to the Lightning. Carolina is 10-6-5 against Eastern Conference teams in a playoff position.

4. Tampa Bay Lightning (42-18-6)

Total points: 184Last week: No. 4
A 4-3 overtime win against the Hurricanes on Tuesday ended an eight-game skid (0-7-1) against Eastern Conference opponents in a playoff position. Tampa Bay has won three in a row.

5. New York Rangers (44-19-5)

Total points: 153Last week: No. 7
The Rangers have won four straight games against Eastern teams in a playoff spot, defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins twice, the Hurricanes and Lightning. They are 10-2-0 against the other seven potential playoff teams from the East since Dec. 31 and 13-5-0 overall.

6. Calgary Flames (40-18-8)

Total points: 149Last week: No. 6
The Flames have lost twice to the Avalanche since March 13, their only losses to a team in playoff position from the Western Conference since Jan. 27.

7. Pittsburgh Penguins (40-18-10)

Total points: 141Last week: No. 5
The Penguins were 8-for-19 on the power play (42.1 percent) in their past five games, scoring at least one power-play goal in each. They're 2-2-1, each regulation loss to the Rangers. Pittsburgh plays its next five games against teams in a playoff position (Minnesota Wild, two against Colorado, Rangers and Washington Capitals).

8. Toronto Maple Leafs (42-19-5)

Total points: 127Last week: No. 8
The Maple Leafs won their past six games against Eastern Conference teams in a playoff position, including two against the Hurricanes, since Feb. 7.

9. Minnesota Wild (41-20-4)

Total points: 125Last week: No. 10
The Wild have won seven in a row since March 16, scoring at least three goals and allowing two or fewer.

10. Boston Bruins (41-20-5)

Total points: 105Last week: No. 9
Taylor Hall scored in back-to-back games and three of five after the forward scored three goals in 22 games from Jan. 26 to March 16. Boston is 14-3-1 since Feb. 19.

11. St. Louis Blues (37-20-9)

Total points: 73Last week: No. 11
The Blues were 5-6-3 in March. It is their first month with a sub-.500 points percentage this season (6-1-0 in October, 6-6-3 in November, 6-2-2 in December, 8-4-0 in January, 6-1-1 in February).

12. Washington Capitals (37-21-10)

Total points: 65Last week: No. 12
The Capitals lost three of five games since winning four in a row and getting a point in eight straight from March 3-18. They have scored 12 goals in those five. Washington scored 19 goals in the four-game winning streak and 36 in the eight-game point streak (7-0-1).

13. Nashville Predators (39-24-4)

Total points: 61Last week: No. 13
The Predators scored at least four goals in 10 of 13 games since March 5 after scoring at least four in one of eight games from Feb. 9-March 2. They are 9-4-0 in those games, including 8-2-0 when they score at least four goals. They were 2-6-0 in their previous eight.

14. Los Angeles Kings (36-23-10)

Total points: 36Last week: No. 14
The Kings haven't won two in a row since winning three straight from March 4-7. They are 4-4-3 since then.

15. Edmonton Oilers (38-25-5)

Total points: 31Last week: No. 15
Prior to their 4-3 shootout win against the Kings on Wednesday, the Oilers had not defeated a team in position to make the playoffs from the West since Feb. 15, a 5-2 win against Los Angeles.

16. Dallas Stars (37-25-3)

Total points: 24Last week: No. 16
The Stars are 5-2-0 since losing three in a row from March 8-15. Forward Roope Hintz scored six goals in his past five games and needs one for 30 this season.
