Super 16: Rangers surge into rankings; Golden Knights, Canucks rise

One voting point made the difference in the Tampa Bay Lightning keeping their hold on the top spot in the NHL.com Super 16 power rankings for a third straight week.

The Lightning are No. 1 again despite losing three games in a row for the first time this season because they got 199 voting points and the Boston Bruins got 198.
Similarly, one voting point made the difference in the New York Rangers getting into the Super 16 for the first time this season.
The Rangers, winners of four straight games and eight of their past nine, got in with 22 voting points, one more than the Nashville Predators.

To create the power rankings, each of the 13 participating staff members puts together his or her version of what the Super 16 should look like. Those are submitted and a point total is assigned to each.
The team picked first is given 16 points, second gets 15, third gets 14 and so on down to No. 16, which gets one point.
Here is the latest Super 16:

1. Tampa Bay Lightning (40-18-5)

Total points:199
Last week:No. 1
Hit:Nikita Kucherov has at least one point in each of the past 17 games he's played since Jan. 14. The forward has 27 points (13 goals, 14 assists) and is plus-14 in that stretch.
Miss: Steven Stamkos reaggravated a lower-body injury in a 4-3 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday, the same injury that caused the center to miss three games from Feb. 10-13.

2. Boston Bruins (39-13-12)

Total points:198
Last week: No. 2
Hit:Forward Brad Marchand has 10 points in a seven-game point streak (two goals, eight assists).
Miss:The Bruins have lost two games in a row, allowing 14 goals.

3. St. Louis Blues (37-17-10)

Total points:173
Last week:No. 5
Hit: The Blues have won five games in a row, and forward Vladimir Tarasenko could return from injury in the next few weeks. He hasn't played since Oct. 24 and has been recovering from surgery he had Oct. 29 to repair his dislocated left shoulder.
Miss:David Perron leads the Blues with 24 goals but has one in 12 games this month.

4. Washington Capitals (39-18-6)

Total points: 166
Last week: No. 4
Hit:Jakub Vrana has scored in his past two games after the forward didn't score in 11 straight.
Miss: The Capitals are 2-for-15 on the power play in their past six games, including one power play in each of the past two games.

5. Pittsburgh Penguins (37-19-6)

Total points: 147
Last week: No. 3
Hit:Evgeni Malkin played his 900th NHL regular-season game Wednesday, joining Sidney Crosby (977) and Mario Lemieux (915) as the players with that many games for the Penguins.
Miss:Zach Aston-Reese has missed five games and the forward is week to week with a lower-body injury.

6. Dallas Stars (37-20-6)

Total points:141
Last week: No. 6
Hit: Tyler Seguin has 11 points (five goals, six assists) in his past 12 games. The forward has a goal in each of the past two games, including the game-winner in a 2-1 win against the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday.
Miss:The Stars are 71.0 percent (22-for-31) on the penalty kill since Feb. 3. That puts them 29th in the NHL in that stretch.

7. Colorado Avalanche (37-18-7)

Total points:138
Last week:No. 7
Hit:The Avalanche will have an above .500 points percentage in each of the first five months of the season for the first time since 2000-01. They were 8-2-2 in October, 8-6-0 in November, 7-5-2 in December, 5-2-2 in January and 9-3-1 in February.
Miss:Colorado was 0-for-10 on the power play in three games before going 2-for-3 against the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday.

8. Philadelphia Flyers (36-20-7)

Total points: 123
Last week:No. 8
Hit:Kevin Hayes has four scored in his past four games, and the forward has 21 goals, one behind forward Travis Konecny for the Flyers lead. They are 17-0-1 when Hayes scores. Philadelphia has won four in a row, seven of nine, and 14 of 20.
Miss:Nothing.

9. Vegas Golden Knights (35-22-8)

Total points:116

Hit:The Golden Knights have won seven straight games, six in a row at home, after defeating the Edmonton Oilers 3-0 on Wednesday.
Miss:Forward Alex Tuch has missed six games with a lower-body injury.

10. New York Islanders (35-20-7)

Total points:79

Hit:Mathew Barzal has six assists in the past four games, and the Islanders have scored 11 goals in their past three after scoring two in a four-game losing streak.
Miss:Barzal, a center, has two goals in his past 27 games.

11. Vancouver Canucks (34-22-6)

Total points:71
Last week:No. 14
Hit: J.T. Miller has 23 points (nine goals, 14 assists), including eight goals and 10 assists at even strength, in 18 games since Jan. 11. The forward leads the Canucks with an NHL career-high 63 points (24 goals, 39 assists). His previous high was 58 points in 2017-18 with the Rangers and Lightning.
Miss:Jacob Markstrom could be out 3-4 weeks with a lower-body injury. The goalie is 23-16-4 with a 2.75 goals-against average and .918 save percentage in 43 games.

12. Carolina Hurricanes (35-23-4)

Total points: 58

Hit:Sebastian Aho has 19 points (12 goals, seven assists) in a Hurricanes-record 13-game point streak, and Andrei Svechnikov has 13 points (five goals, eight assists) in an 11-game point streak.
Miss: The Hurricanes are without their regular goalies, James Reimer (lower body) and Petr Mrazek (concussion).

13. Edmonton Oilers (33-23-8)

Total points:56
Last week:No. 11
Hit:Leon Draisaitl has 16 points (eight goals, eight assists) in his past 10 games. The forward leads the NHL with 99 points (37 goals, 62 points).
Miss:Kailer Yamamoto is week to week with an ankle injury sustained Sunday. The forward had 21 points (nine goals, 12 assists) in 21 games, and the Oilers were 13-5-3 with Yamamoto in the lineup since he made his season debut Dec. 31.

14. Toronto Maple Leafs (33-23-8)

Hit:John Tavares has five points (three goals, two assists) in his past three games. The center needs four goals to score 30 for a third straight season and fifth time in the past six seasons.
Miss:Jake Muzzin will be out four weeks with a broken hand, an injury sustained in a 4-3 win against the Lightning on Wednesday. Muzzin is the third of Toronto's regular top-four defensemen to be injured, joining Morgan Rielly (foot, 18 games missed) and Cody Ceci (ankle, 10 games missed).

15. Columbus Blue Jackets (31-20-14)

Total points: 23
Last week: No. 13
Hit: Pierre-Luc Dubois ended an 11-game goal drought by scoring in a 5-4 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday. Dubois has scored in three of his past 24 games.
Miss:The Blue Jackets have played an NHL-high 41 one-goal games but have won fewer than half (19-8-14). Columbus is 0-4 in the shootout.

16. New York Rangers (34-24-4)

Total points: 22

Hit:They are 11-3-0 since Jan. 31 and have won a Rangers-record eight straight road games, outscoring their opponents 29-15.
Miss: Igor Shesterkin will be out a couple of weeks with a nondisplaced rib fracture, an injury sustained in a car accident Sunday. The rookie goalie has won seven straight starts since Jan. 31. Forward Pavel Buchnevich, who was also in the accident, is day to day and missed a 4-3 overtime win against the Islanders on Tuesday.
