Super 16: Bruins take over No. 1 spot

There is a new No. 1 team in the NHL.com Super 16 power rankings for the first time in 17 weeks.

The Boston Bruins ended the Tampa Bay Lightning streak of 16 straight weeks at No. 1 by one point (206-205). Boston was the only team ranked in the top three by all 14 participating staff members.
The Lightning received one more No. 1 vote than the Bruins (5-4) but were ranked No. 4 by two writers and No. 6 by one, which prevented them from being No. 1 for the 17th straight week.
The Vegas Golden Knights received five No. 1 votes, but the rest of the writers ranked them from No. 2 to No. 7.

To create the power rankings, each of the participating staff members puts together his or her version of what they think the Super 16 should look like. Those are submitted and a point total is assigned to each.
The team picked first is given 16 points, second gets 15, third gets 14, and so on down to No. 16, which gets one point.

1. Boston Bruins (33-11-8)

Total points: 206Last week: No. 3
Hit: Goalie Tuukka Rask is 19-0-2 with a 1.61 goals-against average, .941 save percentage and two shutouts since Nov. 29. His 21-game point streak is the fourth longest by a Bruins goalie and the longest since Pete Peeters' 31-game streak in 1982-83.
Miss: Forward Noel Acciari (lower body) and defenseman Kevan Miller (upper body) are out of the lineup. Acciari has missed six games and Miller has missed two. Forward Anders Bjork (upper body) has missed four games and forward Frank Vatrano (lower body) was scratched from a 6-1 win against the New York Rangers on Wednesday.

2. Tampa Bay Lightning (36-14-3)

Total points: 205Last week: No. 1
Hit: The Lightning play four of their next six games and 18 of their final 29 at home, where they are 17-5-1.
Miss: They are 69.4 percent on the penalty kill in 11 games since Jan. 9 (25-for-36) and are 24th in the NHL at 78.4 percent.

3. Vegas Golden Knights (35-14-4)

Total points: 199Last week: No. 2
Hit: The Golden Knights are one of three teams (Bruins, Dallas Stars) that have three 20-goal scorers (William Karlsson 28, James Neal 23, Erik Haula 20). They are one goal by Jonathan Marchessault from being the only team with four.
Miss: They have lost two out of three games in regulation for the first time since they lost three in a row from Nov. 28-Dec. 1. They have allowed 13 goals in their past three games.

4. Nashville Predators (32-12-8)

Total points: 187Last week: No. 5
Hit: The Predators are 9-2-3 since defenseman Ryan Ellis made his season debut Jan. 2, after a 3-2 shootout loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday. They are 8-2-3 in games played without forward Filip Forsberg, who missed 11 with injury and his second because of suspension Wednesday.
Miss: Forsberg has one game left on his suspension for interference against New York Rangers forward Jimmy Vesey on Saturday. Forsberg can return at the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday.

5. Winnipeg Jets (32-13-9)

Total points: 180Last week: No. 4
Hit: The Jets have a point in 10 consecutive home games (9-0-1) and are the only team in the Western Conference with at least 20 home wins (20-3-2).
Miss: Forward Blake Wheeler has no goals in 12 games since Jan. 7 with nine assists in that span.

6. Washington Capitals (31-17-5)

Total points: 143Last week: No. 6
Hit: Center Evgeny Kuznetsov has at least one assist in five consecutive games, the longest such streak by a Capitals player this season. He leads them with 36 assists, and Washington is 17-4-3 when he has at least one.
Miss: Forward T.J. Oshie has two goals in 26 games played since Nov. 20, with 12 assists in that span, six in 19 games since returning from injury Dec. 19.

7. Pittsburgh Penguins (30-22-3)

Total points: 131Last week: No. 8
Hit: Center Evgeni Malkin leads the NHL in goals (23) and points (41) since Dec. 1. Center Sidney Crosby is second with 35 points (seven goals, 28 assists).
Miss: Forwards Patric Hornqvist (lower body) and Conor Sheary (lower body) are week to week. Sheary has missed three games and Hornqvist has missed two.

8. Dallas Stars (31-19-4)

Total points: 116Last week: No. 9
Hit: Center Jason Spezza's production has returned since he was a healthy scratch Jan. 15 against the Bruins. He has an assist in three straight games and eight points (two goals, six assists) in nine games.
Miss: Not much right now. The Stars have won three in a row and have held the opposition to one goal in each game while going 11-for-11 on the penalty kill and 4-for-13 on the power play.

9. St. Louis Blues (32-20-3)

Total points: 114Last week: No. 7
Hit: Forward Jaden Schwartz scored his second goal in five games since returning from injury Jan. 25. They play seven of their next nine games against Central Division opponents and are 7-5-1 against teams from their division.
Miss: The Blues have scored four goals in their past three games, including a 3-1 loss to the Bruins and a 6-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild.

10. Toronto Maple Leafs (32-19-5)

Total points: 104Last week: No. 11
Hit: Center Nazem Kadri had eight points (three goals, five assists) during a six-game point streak that ended in a 3-2 shootout win against the Predators on Wednesday.
Miss: The Maple Leafs are 1-5-2 since Nov. 25 against the seven teams that are in position to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the Eastern Conference.

11. San Jose Sharks (28-17-8)

Total points: 75Last week: No. 10
Hit: Marc-Edouard Vlasic leads NHL defensemen with six goals since Jan. 1 (six) and is fourth with 13 points. Brent Burns leads defensemen in assists (13) and points (16) in the same span.
Miss: Sharks forward Joe Pavelski has one goal in 12 games since Jan. 15. He has 10 goals in 53 games, which puts him on pace for 15 this season. He averaged 29.4 goals per season in his first nine full seasons (not including his rookie season, when he played 46 games, and the shortened 2012-13 season).

12. Minnesota Wild (29-19-5)

Total points: 67Last week: No. 14
Hit: The Wild were tied for fifth in the NHL with 63 goals in the third period.
Miss: They led the League with 70 goals against in the third period.

13. Calgary Flames (27-18-8)

Total points: 44Last week: NR
Hit: The Flames are 5-0-1 in six road games since Jan. 9; they play their next five games on the road.
Miss: They are 1-for-19 on the power play in six games since Jan. 24.

14. Colorado Avalanche (29-19-4)

Total points: 43Last week: No. 13
Hit: The Avalanche have won nine consecutive home games, their longest streak since they moved from Quebec to Colorado in 1995. The longest home winning streak in franchise history is 10 games, which was accomplished twice by the Quebec Nordiques (1983-84 and 1994-95).
Miss: They've lost four of their past five road games (1-3-1) and are 10-12-3 on the road.

15. New Jersey Devils (27-17-8)

Total points: 34Last week: NR
Hit: The Devils' next win will be their 28th, the amount they had in 82 games last season (28-40-14). They have played 52 this season.
Miss: Goalie Cory Schneider has missed five games with a groin injury and is not expected to play against the Calgary Flames on Thursday.

16. Anaheim Ducks (26-19-10)

Total points: 26Last week: No. 12
Hit: Ryan Getzlaf's assist on Rickard Rakell's power-play goal Tuesday was his 300th power-play point in the NHL. He joined Teemu Selanne (410) as the only players in Ducks history with at least that many.
Miss: Forward Jakob Silfverberg has one goal in 12 games since Jan. 13 and three in 21 games since Dec. 19. He had nine goals in 19 games from Oct. 29-Dec. 18.
