TBL@DET: Kucherov beats Howard to win shootout

DETROIT -- Edward Pasquale made 19 saves in his NHL debut for the Tampa Bay Lightning in a 6-5 shootout win against the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena on Tuesday.

Pasquale, 28, had spent parts of each of the past eight seasons in the American Hockey League.
"This team has so much scoring power," Pasquale said. "I didn't expect to give up five goals in my debut, but I waited nine years and I got a win. I'm good with that."

Nikita Kucherov scored the winner in the third round of the shootout but had his 10-game point streak end.
Frans Nielsen scored his second career hat trick, and Gustav Nyquist had two goals for Detroit (12-12-4), which has lost two straight and five of seven (2-3-2). Jimmy Howard made 30 saves.
"This is a really tough loss," Nielsen said. "You have to be able to win a game when you are up two in the third period."
Mathieu Joseph had two goals and an assist for Tampa Bay (21-7-1), which has won four straight and nine of its past 11.

The Lightning have won 13 consecutive regular-season games against the Red Wings, with their last season coming Nov. 3, 2015.
"We had a lot of different players step up tonight," Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. "That's a sign than good things are happening."
Nyquist gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead at 16:54 of the first period, taking a pass from Dylan Larkin and beating Pasquale from low in the left circle.
Nielsen scored 21 seconds later to make it 2-0, getting a loose puck in the slot following a turnover by Tyler Johnson.

Enterprise Hat Trick: Nielsen nets three for Wings

Detroit outshot Tampa Bay 12-5 in the first period, but the Lightning had a 30-12 edge in the final two periods and overtime.
"That's a really good team and they pushed hard all night," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. "I thought we had a very good first period, but I never felt we were in command after that."
Joseph cut it to 2-1 at 5:10 of the second period, scoring with one hand over Howard's glove as he went for the poke check.
Joseph tied it 2-2 at 11:37, scoring into an empty net after Howard's clearing attempt from behind the net bounced off Yanni Gourde's skate.

"He made a lot happen with his speed out there," Cooper said. "We needed that."
Nielsen put the Red Wings ahead 3-2 at 13:33 with a wrist shot from the high slot, but Steven Stamkos tied it 3-3 at 14:27, taking a stretch pass from Ryan Callahan and scoring on a breakaway.
Nielsen completed the hat trick at 16:26, beating a screened Pasquale from the slot to make it 4-3.
Nyquist made it 5-3 at 4:06 of the third period, receiving a drop pass from Larkin before beating Pasquale five-hole.

"We had a two-goal lead in the third period at home, and we couldn't get out of here with two points," Nyquist said. That's tough."
J.T. Miller cut it to 5-4 at 9:50 and Cedric Paquette tied it 5-5 with a shorthanded goal at 14:58.
"Everything I touch is going in the net right now, so my confidence is high," said Paquette, who has four goals in his past six games. "The way this team is playing, we get success just by staying simple."
Red Wings defenseman Danny DeKeyser did not play in the third period after taking a Stamkos slap shot off his left glove.
"We'll know more tomorrow, but we expect he's going to be out for multiple weeks," Blashill said.

They said it

"Some guys make it to the NHL at 18, but [Edward Pasquale] had to wait 10 years beyond that. He gave us a chance to win the game, and that's what we did. He'll never forget this game, there's no feeling like it."-- Lightning coach Jon Cooper

TBL@DET: Pasquale makes tough save in shootout

"We had five goals, but I really think we needed to put more pressure on a goalie making his NHL debut. It's very disappointing how much time we spent in our own end and how many mistakes we made, even when we had a two-goal lead in the third period."-- Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall
