"Tom is an invaluable member of our team and we are pleased that he will play a great part in our foreseeable future," general manager Brian MacLellan said. "Tom is a unique player in this league. At 24 years of age, he has an impressive amount of experience and we believe that he will only continue to grow and improve as a player. With his ability to play in virtually any game situation, teams need players like Tom in order to succeed in the NHL."
Washington selected Wilson in the first round (No. 16) of the 2012 NHL Draft. He has 104 points (35 goals, 69 assists) in 391 NHL games and 20 points (eight goals, 12 assists) in 62 playoff games.
"Obviously, I think both sides were kind of on the same page," Wilson said Monday. "For myself, I love it in Washington. It's definitely a second home for me and I've had nothing but good times there since I've been there, so obviously I was thrilled to get some term and continue to make it my home and just kind of look forward to building as a player, building as a team and just get comfortable and keep moving forward from that perspective. I think probably Brian would be able to speak better about what they were thinking, but it's nice to have that confidence from them. I think both sides are happy and now I'm just excited to be around for as long as possible.
"Six years is a long time. I think they know me well enough and we've built that relationship over the last five seasons. The development, they've watched me grow as a player and my role on the team. I think from their side, they're confident that I'm going to continue to grow as a player, and that's expected. I think they know me well enough to know that I'm going to come to the rink and give it my all every single day. It's fun, it's exciting and I'm obviously thrilled and pretty excited to be a part of that. When the team kind of expressed that, it's really nice to hear and very humbling and privileged to be in that situation."
