Hurricanes at Devils | Recap

NEWARK, N.J. -- Jesper Bratt had two goals and an assist for the New Jersey Devils in a 4-2 win against the Carolina Hurricanes at Prudential Center on Thursday.

Jack Hughes had three assists and Stefan Noesen had a goal and an assist for the Devils (13-7-2).

"I think they play really tight and we're learning to play tighter," Hughes said. "If we give up 20 shots, or whatever it is, we really believe in our goalies. It gives us a really good chance to win."

Jacob Markstrom made 20 saves in his 500th NHL game. The Devils goalie became the third Sweden-born goalie in NHL history hit the milestone, following Henrik Lundqvist (887 games) and Tommy Salo (526).

"Playing 500 games is something you only dream about when you're when you're younger," Markstrom said. "I feel like I got a few more left in me but the guys made it special. The fans were amazing, and I even had the little guy come into the to the locker room before the game."

Markstrom's 2-year-old son, Clarke, joined his father in the locker room before the game.

"It gets a little emotional when you get family in the room because you're not really used to having your kid in your lap 10 minutes before the game starts, but it made it special, for sure," he said.

Jack Roslovic and Andrei Svechnikov scored, and Spencer Martin made 17 saves for the Hurricanes (14-5-0), who had won three straight after a 4-1 win at the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday.

"We weren't very good," Carolina coach Rod Brind'Amour said. "We were good to start the game and then I thought the penalties ... it's always that that seems to rear its head. The momentum flipped on that."

The Devils went 2-for-3 on the power play.

Roslovic gave the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead at 8:43 of the first period when he swept home a rebound while battling for position in the slot.

Bratt tied the game 1-1 at 14:45 when he redirected a pass from Hughes at the right post.

"'Bratter' is just playing elite right now," Hughes said. "We're connected. We're moving the puck well and finding our groove but it's about staying consistent throughout the year."

Noesen scored a 5-on-3 power-play goal on a tip-in from the slot to give the Devils a 2-1 lead at :46 of the second period. He played the three previous seasons with Carolina before signing a three-year contract with New Jersey on July 1.

"I mean, [Hughes] was just terrific from start to finish," New Jersey coach Sheldon Keefe said. "This is a team that makes it real hard on you to get through the neutral zone, hard to get time and space, and Jack was finding ways to do that.

"For [Noesen] to score that goal against his former team, it was big, but more importantly, he just battled all night despite the fact he was feeling [sick]."

Svechnikov tied the game with a power-play goal just 12 seconds into the third period on a wrist shot from the bottom of the left face-off circle. Martin Necas earned the primary assist when he sent a bank pass off the end boards to Svechnikov skating down left wing.

"It's homework; that's what we've been doing in the practices," Svechnikov said. "That's just a big play."

Dougie Hamilton gave the Devils a 3-2 lead at 10:35 on a slap shot from the right face-off circle.

Bratt scored a power-play goal on a wrist shot from the slot at 14:05 for the 4-2 final.

"Anytime you have a night like that when you're celebrating a player's accomplishment, it's very personal and means a lot," Keefe said. "You want to play well, and you want to finish it on a high note so to be able to get to win for him was great."
