Aho's goal held up as his 58th game-winning goal, passing Hall of Famer Ron Francis for the most in Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers history.
"That's special," Aho said. "Obviously having my name next to that kind of legend in the same sentence, it's special. Everyone knows what he did for the game, and how good of a player he was. So probably means that you've done something right to be able to at least be in the same sentence with that guy."
Jordan Staal and Jack Roslovic also scored for Carolina (14-4-0), which has won three straight games and 12 of its past 14 (12-2-0). Pyotr Kochetkov made 18 saves.
"I don't think we really established anything for two periods," Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour said. "We were just kind of going through the motions. Thankfully the game was still there and then I thought we got to it the way we kind of hoped to play and got rewarded."
Ryan Poehling scored for Philadelphia (8-10-2). Ivan Fedotov made 33 saves.
"We were hanging right with them, thought we were doing a good job through the first 40 [minutes]," Flyers defenseman Nick Seeler said. "We got away from our game, we stopped getting pucks in and going to work on their [defensemen] and you saw what happed in the third."
Carolina took over a 1-1 game with three goals in the first 6:57 of the third period.
Aho started the run at 1:03 when he intercepted a pass up the boards by Flyers defenseman Erik Johnson in the Philadelphia zone, cut to the middle of the ice and sent a low shot between Fedotov's pads.
It was Aho's fifth goal of the season but his first at 5-on-5.
"Personally, the puck hasn't gotten too much in the net, so just try to not get frustrated," Aho said. "Happy that we got one there and won the game."
