Recap: Penguins at Senators 9.29.24

SUDBURY, Ontario -- Evgeni Malkin had a hat trick with an assist, Sidney Crosby scored twice, and the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Ottawa Senators 5-2 in the Kraft Hockeyville 2024 game at Sudbury Arena on Sunday.

Kris Letang and Bryan Rust each had two assists, and Tristan Jarry and Filip Larsson combined to make 36 saves for the Penguins (1-2-0).

Nick Cousins and Tim Stutzle scored for the Senators (2-1-1). Anton Forsberg made 14 saves.

Cousins gave Ottawa a 1-0 lead 4:00 into the first period when Drake Batherson took the puck away from Penguins defenseman Marcus Pettersson. The Stanley Cup champion forward last season with the Florida Panthers circled back to the front of the net and beat Jarry blocker side.

Crosby tied it 1-1 at 8:54 when Kris Letang set the Penguins captain up for a redirect.

Stutzle put the Senators back in front 2-1 at 12:55 when he skated past the Penguins defense and beat Jarry stick side.

Malkin scored his two goals in a 2:03 span of the second period, tying the game 2-2 with a power-play goal at 14:59 of the second and putting Pittsburgh ahead 3-2 at 17:02 by stickhandling around Ottawa defenseman Thomas Chabot and poking the puck past Forsberg.

Crosby poked in a pass from Rust for a 4-2 lead at 7:53 of the third.

Malkin completed the hat trick with an empty-net goal at 17:44 and a 5-2 lead.

Utah 6, Avalanche 3: Dylan Guenther and Clayton Keller each had three points for the Utah Hockey Club in the win against the Colorado Avalanche at Ball Arena in Denver.

Guenther had two goals and an assist, and Keller had a goal and two assists for Utah (3-1-0). Karel Vejmelka made 26 saves.

Mikhail Sergachev had two assists for Utah. The defenseman was acquired in a trade with the Tama Bay Lightning on June 29.

Sam Malinski had a goal and an assist, and Justus Annunen made 32 saves for Colorado (0-3-0).

Miles Wood scored on the power play at 13:12 of the first period to give Colorado a 1-0 lead.

Guenther scored on the power play at 18:32 to tie it 1-1.

Malinski scored on the power play at 2:17 of the second period to give the Avalanche a 2-1 lead.

Guenther tied it 2-2 at 7:19.

Cameron Hebig scored to give Utah a 3-2 lead at 13:13.

Josh Doan made it 4-2 Utah at 19:08.

Keller scored at 6:15 of the third period to give Utah a 5-2 lead.

Calum Ritchie scored to pull Colorado within 5-3 at 13:23.

Jack McBain scored short-handed into an empty net at 17:58 for the 6-3 final.

Stars 4, Wild 2: Logan Stankoven scored twice, and the Dallas Stars defeated the Minnesota Wild at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Casey DeSmith made 13 saves for Dallas (5-0-0).

Jesper Wallstedt made 25 saves for Minnesota (2-2-0).

Arttu Hyry scored on the power play to give the Stars a 1-0 lead at 6:41 of the first period.

Stankoven made it 2-0 Stars at 12:24 of the second period. Stankoven’s second goal made it 3-0 at 6:46 of the third period.

Marco Rossi scored on the power play at 11:36 for the Wild to make it 3-1. Travis Boyd scored just 24 seconds later at 12:00 to make it 3-2.

Colin Blackwell scored into an empty net for Dallas for the 4-2 final.
