Flames at Kraken | Recap

SEATTLE -- Jordan Eberle scored 48 seconds into overtime for the Seattle Kraken to hand the Calgary Flames their first loss of the season, 2-1 at Climate Pledge Arena on Saturday.

“It was a pretty meat-and-potatoes game,” Eberle said. “They did a good job of blocking a lot of shots and not really giving us a lot of opportunities. … We had some looks, but kind of a playoff-style game. Not a lot of offense either way, so it’s always good to find a way to get one in the extra inning.”

Brandon Montour retrieved his own rebound and passed to Eberle, who was streaking down the slot. The Kraken captain scored his fifth goal of the season with a wrist shot past goalie Dan Vladar’s blocker.

“Great play [by Montour],” Eberle said. “He just kind of fed it, put it on a tee for me, and I didn’t really have to do too much.”

Chandler Stephenson also scored for the Kraken (4-2-0), who have won three straight. Joey Daccord made 21 saves.

“It’s a bit of a slog of a game and you have to be determined to stay with it and not give them anything,” Seattle coach Dan Bylsma said. “Continue to be determined to get back the other way. That’s what this game presented, and that’s what Calgary presents.”

Blake Coleman scored for the Flames (4-0-1), who fell one victory shy of setting a franchise record for longest season-opening winning streak (Calgary also won four straight to start the 1993-94 and 2009-10 seasons). Vladar made 21 saves.

“We just weren’t sharp with the puck,” Calgary coach Ryan Huska said. “And I think that’s kind of where the game caught up to us at the end.”

The Flames went 1-for-3 on the power play. The Kraken went 1-for-6.

“It was a tight game, fast-paced game, but it’s going to be hard to win games when we take that many penalties,” Calgary captain Mikael Backlund said. “Both power plays scored, but we just lost our momentum in the second with too many penalties.”

CGY@SEA: Coleman strikes first with PPG late in the 1st

Coleman gave the Flames a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 19:51 of the first period. He scored with a slap shot through traffic from the left point after Daccord turned the puck over below the left circle.

“I was going to rip it out off the glass and it just fumbled off my stick and then I was kind of in the soup there,” Daccord said. “Not ideal, but we live and we learn, and it was a great effort from the group and a big win.”

Stephenson tied it 1-1 at 12:25 of the second period on a 5-on-3 power play, one-timing a Jared McCann pass from the top of the right circle under Vladar’s blocker. It was Stephenson’s first goal for Seattle after signing a seven-year, $43.75 million contract ($6.25 million average annual value) on July 1.

"It's a weight off the shoulders," Stephenson said. "It just kind of makes you feel a little bit more relaxed, a little bit more at ease. So, hopefully it's the first of many and I can just keep rolling here and the team keeps rolling and keeps putting points in the bank."

NOTES: It was Eberle’s third overtime goal with the Kraken, the most in their history. ... The Winnipeg Jets (4-0-0) are the only NHL team that remains undefeated.
