Devils at Red Wings | Recap

DETROIT -- The New Jersey Devils scored three power-play goals in a 5-4 win against the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena on Friday.

Dougie Hamilton, Timo Meier and Jack Hughes each scored with the man-advantage for New Jersey (16-8-2), which has won nine of its past 12 games (9-3-0).

"A power play can come in and get a game back for you," Meier said. "We got some very big goals and then we were able to shut it down at the end."

NJD@DET: Hughes increases Devils' lead with PPG in 3rd period

Jacob Markstrom made 25 saves for the Devils, one game after allowing three goals on 10 shots in the first period of a 3-0 loss to the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday.

"[Markstrom] made some really big saves down the stretch," New Jersey coach Sheldon Keefe said. "I thought the guys did a good job of not letting much get to him."

Lucas Raymond extended his goal-scoring streak to five games, and Vladimir Tarasenko had a goal and an assist for Detroit (10-11-2).

"I'm just trying to do the same things -- it is all about shooting and staying with it," said Raymond, who scored twice in his first 18 games this season. "The puck is going in now, which is fun."

Cam Talbot made 24 saves in his 500th NHL game.

"That's an impressive feat -- it always is -- so huge credit to him," Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said of Talbot reaching the milestone.

Tarasenko's power-play goal gave Detroit a 1-0 lead at 3:41 of the first period, beating Markstrom from the left face-off circle.

Raymond extended the lead to 2-0 at 9:22, taking a pass from Tarasenko and scoring on a wraparound.

"I really liked our start," Lalonde said. "But then we got away from what had been successful."

NJD@DET: Raymond gets deflection goal in opening period

Hamilton beat Talbot from the high slot on the power play at 16:05 to make it 2-1. The Red Wings used a coach's challenge for goaltender interference on Stefan Noesen, but the call on the ice was upheld after video review, and Detroit receivd a two-minute penalty for delay of game.

Meier tied the game 2-2 on the ensuing power play when his shot deflected off Simon Edvinsson's skate and over Talbot's shoulder at 18:00.

"We had an opportunity to have a really good first period and come out with the lead, but we didn't get it done," Red Wings forward Tyler Motte said. "You just have to find a way to get clears and get blocks – that's what killing (penalties) is all about."

Motte gave the Red Wings a 3-2 lead at 1:26 of the second period, tipping Ben Chiarot's slap shot past Markstrom for his first goal of the season.

Nico Hischier tied it 3-3 at 11:10, scoring from the slot after Meier forced an offensive-zone turnover.

Noesen put the Devils ahead 4-3 at 16:49, kneeing the puck over the line during a goalmouth scramble.

Hughes made it 5-3 with a power-play goal at 3:05 from just inside the right circle.

Justin Holl scored 22 seconds later to cut the lead to 5-4 at 3:27.

NJD@DET: Meier sets up Hischier for goal in 2nd period

Hischier had a goal and an assist, drew the penalty that led to Hughes' goal, and won three key face-offs after Detroit pulled Talbot with 2:15 to play.

"He impacts the game in so many ways," Keefe said. "Those are the things you need when it isn't really your night as a team. You need individuals to step up and make a difference and he certainly was one of those guys tonight."
