Flyers at Red Wings | Recap

DETROIT -- Patrick Kane scored the go-ahead goal in the third period and had an assist, helping the Detroit Red Wings defeat the Philadelphia Flyers 6-4 at Little Caesars Arena on Wednesday.

Kane made it 5-4 at 7:22, scoring with a wrist shot from the left face-off circle off a stretch pass from Moritz Seider. Lucas Raymond then scored into an empty net at 18:48 for the 6-4 final.

“We had some things in mind going into these last games before the (holiday) break,” Kane said. “We’re playing here at home and there’s been some good energy from the crowd in the last couple games and from the team, too.”

Raymond added an assist, and J.T. Compher also had a goal and an assist for Detroit (13-14-4), which has won three of its past four games. Dylan Larkin had two assists, and Alex Lyon made 15 saves after being out for the previous nine games with a lower-body injury.

The Red Wings lost top-pair defenseman Simon Edvinsson to an upper-body injury; his last shift ended at 11:44 of the first period. Coach Derek Lalonde did not have an update on his status after the game.

“He obviously only played a handful of minutes,” Lalonde said. “A lot of our ‘D’ are not accustomed to playing top-four minutes and I thought they gutted it out.”

Sean Couturier had two assists, and Samuel Ersson made 18 saves for Philadelphia (14-14-4), which has lost five of seven.

“I don’t think we played well,” Flyers coach John Tortorella said. “We crawled back into it, which is good, but we didn’t spend enough time in the offensive zone and we didn’t defend well enough to get the puck back.”

Travis Konecny gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead at 1:06 of the first period, sliding a backhand under Lyon on a breakaway.

Compher tied it 1-1 on the power play at 18:19, tapping in Larkin’s pass at the edge of the crease.

The Flyers committed a minor penalty and a double minor in the final 7:44 of the period.

“We got the good start, but the penalty trouble at the end of the period killed all our momentum,” Couturier said. “They capitalized on their chances and we made some costly mistakes.”

Alex DeBrincat gave the Red Wings a 2-1 lead at 10:15 of the second period following a Flyers turnover, one-timing Kane’s cross-slot pass on a 3-on-1 break.

Noah Cates tied it 2-2 at 10:40. He helped Philadelphia win the puck along the end boards, then went to the front of the net, where Tyson Foerster’s shot from the top of the slot deflected in off his leg.

Michael Rasmussen put Detroit back in front 3-2 at 16:05, scoring directly off Compher’s face-off win, and Joe Veleno made it 4-2 at 17:27, scoring off a pass by Christian Fischer to finish a 2-on-0 rush.

Ryan Poehling cut it to 4-3 at 3:50 of the third period, knocking in Couturier’s pass at the left post.

Owen Tippett tied it 4-4 at 5:39. He drove down the left wing, toe-dragged around Jeff Petry, and cut to the net before scoring around Lyon’s left skate.

“We know what we have to do to have success against them, and I thought we reset ourselves in the third period,” Tippett said. “It obviously wasn’t enough.”
