Kings celebrate Lewis for 1,000th NHL game milestone

The only way to celebrate a King is with a crown.

Los Angeles Kings forward Trevor Lewis played his 1,000th NHL game on Saturday and the team showed up with some custom-made hats for the occasion.

The black caps integrated Lewis' jersey number, 61, combining the number one with the letter K to signify the milestone.

Lewis, in his 17th NHL season, has played 14 of them with the Kings returning to L.A. before last season after one season with the Winnipeg Jets and two with the Calgary Flames.

“It’s unbelievable," Lewis said. "I couldn’t ask to do it with a better organization and better bunch of guys. It’s been through a lot with trainers and management and some guys in here, and to do it in a Kings sweater, it’s very special."

The Kings also decorated his locker for the occasion.

Before the game, Lewis' two children, Boone and Brix read the lineup in the team's locker room (with an assist from their grandpa, Trevor's dad Randy).

“I wasn’t expecting that," Lewis said. "My kids are pretty shy, so I didn’t think they’d make it in, but that was very special. Got a little choked up, so that was pretty good.”

Of the 1,000, it was Lewis' 782nd career game with the Kings.

“It was really exciting just to have all the guys wear the hats in warmups and stuff like that," Lewis said. "It was pretty awesome. And to grind one out and get a win was more special.”
