"This year the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame is partnering with events that share a connection with the songs we're inducting," Vanessa Thomas, the executive director of CSHF, said in a statement. "There's not a more fitting stage to celebrate Stompin' Tom's 'The Hockey Song' than at an NHL game."
Connors' song, which chronicles a fictional hockey game, has been a staple in hockey arenas since it was released 1973. It is specifically known for its catchy chorus, "The good old hockey game is the best game you can name," and a recording of the song is played at every Maple Leafs home game.
Connors' son Tom Jr. will be presented with a plaque before Toronto's game, and the Connors family will be presented with a special gift. Tim Hicks, a platinum-selling Canadian country artist, will perform the song at the game.
"The Connors family would like to express how appreciative we are to the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame for inducting 'The Hockey Song' to join so many other great Canadian songs that have helped shape our identity," Tom Jr. said. "Tom wrote the song in 1971, and it's wonderful to see how fans to this day continue to call it their hockey anthem."
