Budaj, 36, will start in goal after Jack Campbell sustained a knee injury that will require surgery in a 1-0 loss to the Calgary Flames on Saturday. Campbell, who is 5-7-0 with a 2.33 goals-against average, a .923 save percentage and one shutout in 13 games this season, became the starter when Jonathan Quick injured his knee last month.
Budaj was 3-3-1 with a 3.76 goals-against average and .876 save percentage for the Tampa Bay Lightning last season. He made 51 starts for the Kings in 2016-17 when Quick sustained a groin injury in the season opener.
The Maples Leafs had their three-game winning streak end with a 5-1 loss at the Boston Bruins on Saturday.

Players to watch

Maples Leafs center John Tavares has six points (three goals, three assists) during a five-game point streak. Tavares has scored in two straight games and three of his past four.
Budaj went 27-20-3 with a 2.12 goals-against average and .917 save percentage as the starter for the Kings in 2016-17.

Status report

Quick isn't expected to return to the lineup until next month, general manager Rob Blake said Tuesday. Quick had surgery to repair a torn meniscus on Oct. 31. … Moore was recalled from Toronto of the American Hockey League on Tuesday and is expected to make his NHL debut during the final two games of the road trip at the San Jose Sharks on Thursday or Anaheim Ducks on Friday.
