Marner nets 2 goals and earns 2 assists in a 7-1 win

NEWARK, N.J.-- Mitchell Marner had two goals and two assists to extend his goal streak to seven games for the Toronto Maple Leafs in a 7-1 win against the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center on Tuesday.

Jack Campbell made 31 saves for the Maple Leafs (29-10-3), who have won five in a row. On Monday against the Devils, Campbell was pulled in the first period after allowing three goals on nine shots in a 6-4 win.
"In the game like this, where we score so much, you tend to overlook the goaltending part of it," Toronto coach Sheldon Keefe said. "But you go back and look at some of those chances when the game still could swing their way, [Campbell] was great. He made the saves we need him to make, and then times when we had breakdowns and gave up really good looks, he came up with game-changing saves."
The line of Michael Bunting, Auston Matthews and Marner scored eight points (four goals, four assists) and had 13 shots on goal.
"We've been really good on the puck," Matthews said. "If we have to dump the puck or chip it in, we've been really good at hounding pucks, getting them back and attacking the net.
"I think all three of us have just been trying to work and find each other, create opportunities. At the same time, be responsible in our own end and try not to give up chances coming back our way."

Jack Hughes scored for the Devils (15-25-5), who have lost six in a row and nine of their past 10. Jon Gillies allowed six goals on 28 shots before being replaced to start the third period by Akira Schmid, who made seven saves on eight shots.
The Devils were playing without coach Lindy Ruff a second straight game after his father, Leeson, died Friday.
"The game of hockey is pretty simple," New Jersey assistant Alain Nasreddine said. "There's a puck, and you want it more than the other guy, and tonight they wanted it more. We've just got to wash this one away and try to forget about it because there's nothing you can take out of this game except that's how we don't want to play."
Jason Spezza scored on a snap shot from the slot to give the Maple Leafs a 1-0 lead 2:13 into the first period.
Matthews scored on a wrist shot from the high slot for a 2-0 lead at 8:38. David Kampf made it 3-0 25 seconds later on a wrist shot from the slot.
Marner scored on a snap shot from the slot to give Toronto a 4-0 lead at 15:31.
"We just haven't really put a full 60 minutes together," Marner said. "I think from the drop of the puck tonight, we wanted to come out, clog up that neutral zone, make it hard to get through us. When we got pucks in deep, we're being hard on them, trying to find a shot, and I think we did a good job of that."

Bunting scored on a 2-on-1 with Marner following a Devils turnover at 8:25 of the second period for a 5-0 lead.
Pierre Engvall made it 6-0 on a shot from the right face-off circle at 15:12.
Toronto scored the final four goals in the third period Monday, giving them 10 in a row in three periods against New Jersey.
Hughes ended that streak with a wrist shot from the right face-off circle to make it 6-1 at 3:31 of the third period.
"They just outskated us, outplayed us," Devils defenseman Damon Severson said. "They did everything better than us tonight. That was definitely an embarrassing one."
Marner scored his second of the game at 5:57 for the 7-1 final. Marner has scored eight goals and 15 points during his NHL career-high goal streak.
"[Bunting, Matthews and Marner] are very much on the same page," Keefe said. "They're moving well with and without the puck to find each other. Take all those things, and combine it with the elite skill they have, they're a hard group to handle. New Jersey has had a real tough time with them the past two games."
