Trevor van Riemsdyk signed a two-year, $1.9 million contract with the Washington Capitals on Sunday. It has an average annual value of $950,000.

The 29-year-old defenseman could have been an unrestricted free agent after the season. He's scored one goal in nine games for the Capitals after signing a one-year, $800,000 contract Oct. 11, and 70 points (16 goals, 54 assists) in 373 NHL games for the Chicago Blackhawks, Carolina Hurricanes and Washington. He won the Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks in 2015.
The Capitals (20-7-4) are tied with the New York Islanders for first in the MassMutual East Division. They're off the next four days before playing the first of back-to-back games against the New Jersey Devils in Washington on Thursday.
