The U.S. will play Canada, which lost 4-3 to Sweden in the other semifinal, for third place on Sunday (9:30 a.m. ET; NHLN). Each won its first five games in the tournament.
Sweden and Russia will play for the championship (1:30 p.m. ET; NHLN). Sweden is seeking its first Under-18 title. Russia hasn't won since 2007.
The United States has won the tournament in seven of the past 10 years and has finished in the top three in each of the past 15 years.
Cole Caufield scored twice for the United States. He tied the game 1-1 by scoring on an assist from Jack Hughes 12 seconds into the third period, and his second goal, at 3:16 of the period, gave the U.S. a 2-1 lead. Caufield tied the tournament record with 14 goals, equaling the mark set by Russia forward Alex Ovechkin in 2002. Caufield and Hughes share the tournament lead with 17 points each; each surpassed the previous U.S. single-tournament record of 16 points set by Phil Kessel in 2005 and is four behind the record of 21 set by Russia forward Nikita Kucherov in 2011.
Semyon Chistyakov scored for Russia to tie the game 2-2 at 7:27, and after a 10-minute overtime, Rodion Amirov beat U.S. goalie Spencer Knight for the only goal of the shootout. Russia goalie Yaroslav Askorav did not allow a goal on five attempts, ending the game by making a save on Matthew Boldy.
"I thought despite having a slow start, the guys really turned it on and played a strong game overall," U.S. coach John Wroblewski told USA Hockey's website. "Russia deserves a lot of credit for the way they played as well.
"We need to have our best foot forward to come home with some hardware tomorrow."
In the second game, Connor Zary scored his second goal of the game for Canada on a wraparound at 12:49 of the third period to tie the game 3-3. Albin Grewe scored the game-winner for Sweden at 17:29, beating goalie Taylor Gauthier with a high shot from the left face-off dot.
Alex Newhook scored for Canada, which outshot Sweden 34-30. Alexander Holtz scored two goals and Philip Broberg scored one for Sweden, which finished third last year.
Hughes was ranked No. 1 by NHL Central Scouting in its final ranking for the 2019 NHL Draft. Caufield was No. 8, and Newhook was No. 13. Knight was No. 1 in Central Scouting's final ranking of North American goalies.
