Delia makes 17 saves, Canucks edge Ducks

ANAHEIM -- Collin Delia made 17 saves in his first start since Feb. 21 for the Vancouver Canucks, a 2-1 win against the Anaheim Ducks at Honda Center on Sunday.

"We were pretty relentless from the get-go," said Delia, who earned his first victory since Feb. 9.
Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller each had a goal and an assist, and Quinn Hughes had two assists for the Canucks (31-33-5), who were coming off a 3-2 shootout win at the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday and have won seven of eight.
"When you have a dud or don't play well, you always look for players to have responses, and I saw some good responses from players who weren't engaged [Saturday] night," Vancouver coach Rick Tocchet said. "That's what the game is all about, being able to respond if things don't go your way."

Ryan Strome scored, and John Gibson made 38 saves for the Ducks (23-37-10), who have lost three of four and were eliminated from Stanley Cup Playoff contention.
"We were kind of reacting rather than making things happen out there," Strome said. "We didn't get a 60-minute effort."
Miller gave Vancouver a 1-0 lead at 9:05 of the first period with a slap shot from above the left circle during a delayed penalty.
Pettersson made it 2-0 at 1:31 of the second, scoring short side from the top of the right circle during the first of four power plays for the Canucks in the period.
"Gibson's a great goalie, and that short-side shot was incredible," Tocchet said.

Delia made his best save on a breakaway by Frank Vatrano at 17:46 before turning away Vatrano's follow-up attempt four seconds later.
The Canucks outshot the Ducks 34-12 through two periods.
"We had some good looks," Pettersson said. "We should have scored more than two, but their goalie kept them in the game."

Strome cut it to 2-1 at 13:10 of the third period when his backhand from along the goal line slipped short side on Delia, ending his bid for his first NHL shutout.
"When it gets near the end of the game, you always root for the goalie to get a shutout, so tough luck on that one," Tocchet said.
Gibson made a save on Anthony Beauvillier on a 3-on-1 with 2:42 left, but Anaheim was unable to tie the game with Gibson pulled for the extra skater in the final 90 seconds.
"The first two periods we didn't have quite the emotion we needed," Strome said. "In the third period, we had some desperation. We put some pucks toward the net, and we forechecked hard and we were competitive. The first two periods we gave them way too much time and space."
NOTES: Vancouver went 3-for-3 on the penalty kill despite entering the game last in the NHL at 68.5 percent. ... Miller has 12 points (six goals, six assists) in his past eight games. ... Pettersson has 12 points (five goals, seven assists) during an eight-game point streak. ... Hughes has 60 assists this season, tying the Canucks record for a defenseman that he set last season. Hughes joined Paul Coffey (four), Bobby Orr (three) and Brian Leetch (two) as the only defensemen in NHL history with multiple seasons with at least 60 assists before the age of 24. ... Gibson has made at least 35 saves in 22 games this season, the most in the NHL.
