The 25-year-old, who has been one of Vancouver's EBUGs for the past five seasons, was signed to an amateur tryout agreement prior to the game.
Toth is currently playing his fourth season with the University of British Columbia, where he is 10-2-1 with a 1.83 goals-against average and .935 save percentage.
He played back-to-back college games Friday and Saturday.
"Just approach it like another game, I guess. I feel like maybe it has not fully sunk in yet," Toth said. "It's hard not to think of it as being different, but at the same time, it's just another hockey game, and I trust my ability and if they need me, I'll do my best to be ready and give them a chance to win. And if not, I'll just kind of try and enjoy the experience from the bench. It's a cool opportunity for sure."
Toth said he is a bit different from some emergency backup goalies, however.
"It's funny because you got the EBUGs who are 40-year-old accountants or Zamboni drivers, and then there's guys like me," Toth said. "I am basically done at UBC in a couple months, and my plan was at the end of this year to try and find an ECHL team to play for and then for next year, I was looking to play maybe in North America or even looking at options in Europe."
Before that happens, Toth, who is from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, got the chance to dress in an NHL game.
"Growing up, I was actually an Anaheim Ducks fan, funny enough," Toth said. "I couldn't really tell you why, but as long as I can remember being a little kid, I was a Ducks fan. But there's definitely guys I looked up to on the Canucks, like Roberto Luongo is a big one, and I met [Jacob] Markstrom one time I practiced with the Canucks, and he was such a nice friendly guy. But after living here for almost five years now, I've definitely started to become more of a Canucks fan, so it's pretty cool."
Toth was the backup on Sunday because Vancouver's top two goalies, Thatcher Demko and Jaroslav Halak, are in NHL COVID-19 protocol, and Spencer Martin, who made 33 saves in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Florida Panthers on Friday, was placed in protocol Saturday.
Arturs Silovs, who is fifth on the depth chart, tested positive while playing for Abbotsford in the American Hockey League, according to Canucks coach Bruce Boudreau.
"I might be the backup tonight," Boudreau joked.
Michael DiPietro, a third-round pick (No. 64) by the Canucks in the 2017 NHL Draft, made 14 saves in his second NHL start (third game). He allowed seven goals on 24 shots in a 7-2 loss to the San Jose Sharks in his NHL debut on Feb. 11, 2019, and hadn't played an NHL game he replaced Markstrom in the third period of a 6-3 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights on Dec. 15, 2019.
DiPietro is 4-7-2 with a 3.19 GAA and .896 save percentage in 13 AHL games this season.
"We've got a different goaltender in most nights these days and we're not really changing our game plan," Boudreau said. "We're just reinforcing that we have to be a little more meticulous defensively. We have to be sharp, we can't have bad shifts, and if we do that you're usually going to come out with some success."
