Markstrom was injured when he made 34 saves in a 9-3 home win against the Boston Bruins on Feb. 22. He was relieved by Thatcher Demko for 1:48 in the first period after he was struck by a stick blade through his mask but returned to finish the game for the Canucks (33-22-6), who are third in the Pacific Division, four points behind the first-place Vegas Golden Knights.
Markstrom is 23-16-4 with a 2.75 goals-against average, a .918 save percentage and two shutouts in 43 games this season.
Demko will start for the Canucks at the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday (7 p.m. ET; TSN2, RDS, SNP, NHL.TV). He's 10-6-2 with a 3.03 GAA and .905 save percentage in 20 games (18 starts) this season.
"He has played good goal for us, our team has confidence in him," Benning said. "This is an opportunity for him to step in and play like he's played for us all year. It's not a perfect situation, but it is what it is. It's going to be a great opportunity for Thatcher."
Demko will be backed up by Domingue, who was traded for minor league goalie
Zane McIntyre
.
"It made sense to do that," Benning said. "Louis has experience in the League and he's played well."
Domingue, who is 3-8-2 with a 3.79 goals-against average and .882 save percentage this season, can become an unrestricted free agent July 1. The 27-year-old is 58-57-10 with a 3.04 GAA, a .904 save percentage and two shutouts in 138 games (122 starts) with the Devils, Tampa Bay Lightning and Arizona Coyotes.
McIntyre, who has not played in the NHL since the 2016-17 season, is 0-4-1 with a 3.97 GAA and .858 save percentage in eight NHL games (three starts) with the Boston Bruins. The 27-year-old signed a one-year contract with the Canucks on July 1, 2019, and was 11-10-2 with a 3.16 GAA and .894 save percentage in 24 games with Utica of the American Hockey League. He can become an unrestricted free agent after the season.
