VAN@MIN, Gm4: Tanev wins game, series in OT

Chris Tanev scored 11 seconds into overtime, and the Vancouver Canucks advanced to the Stanley Cup Playoffs with a 5-4 win against the Minnesota Wild in Game 4 of the best-of-5 Stanley Cup Qualifiers series at Rogers Place in Edmonton on Friday.

It was the defenseman's first NHL postseason goal in his 20th game. He scored two goals in 69 games in the regular season.

"The puck just bounced over their winger's stick," said Tanev, who has played for the Canucks since 2010-11, the second-longest tenure with them behind defenseman Alexander Edler (2006-07). "… I was shooting for [J.T. Miller's] stick. He just missed it. I don't know if that fooled the goalie (Alex Stalock). The goalie might have thought that he was going to tip it, and I think their D maybe skated by him and screened him a bit, and it ended up going in."

It is tied for the second-fastest overtime goal in NHL postseason history. Brian Skrudland scored nine seconds into overtime for the Montreal Canadiens against the Calgary Flames in Game 2 of the 1986 Stanley Cup Final.

"[Tanev] doesn't get a lot of credit for that part of the game," Canucks coach Travis Green said. "He's a warrior, he's been a great mentor for our young players, great teammate. He's been there when Vancouver's had some pretty good times and he's been through some hard times too. He's been a big part of where we're trying to go. I'm happy for him, for sure."

The Wild, the No. 10 seed in the Western Conference, led 3-1 in the second period and 4-3 entering the third.

"When you have a lead, especially with the type of group we have, you expect to get the job done and the right result at the end of the night," Minnesota forward Eric Staal said. "Disappointing finish, for sure, especially how quickly it ended in overtime. We wanted a little longer of a crack at it. It stinks."

Tanev had a goal and two assists, and Bo Horvat, Quinn Hughes and Tanner Pearson each had a goal and an assist for the Canucks, the No. 7 seed in the West.

Vancouver, which had not won a postseason series since the 2011 Western Conference Final, will play the loser of the round-robin game Sunday between the St. Louis Blues and Dallas Stars in the first round of the playoffs in Edmonton, the West hub city. The Colorado Avalanche (2-0-0), Vegas Golden Knights (2-0-0), Blues (0-2-0) and Stars (0-2-0) are playing in the round-robin portion of the Qualifiers to determine the top four seeds in the West.

Horvat scored with a one-timer from the slot to tie the game 4-4 with 5:46 remaining in the third.

"This franchise has been through a lot," Horvat said. "These last four years, not making the playoffs, we've taken it to heart. We wanted to come out and prove ourselves, play hard. We have a great group of guys here, and to finally get a playoff win under our belt in a playoff series, it definitely feels great, but we've got a lot more work to do."

Joel Eriksson Ek scored at 5:39 of the second to put the Wild ahead 3-1.

"It's tough to take in right now," defenseman Jared Spurgeon said. " It's pretty quick to get going, and all of a sudden, it's done. We put in a lot of work. For it to end that quickly stinks. ... We thought we had the game in our hands tonight and just didn't make the plays at the end."

Brandon Sutter batted the puck out of the air from in close at 7:20 to make it 3-2, and Hughes scored a power-play goal with a wrist shot through traffic to tie it 3-3 at 8:44.

Nico Sturm scored with 52 seconds left in the second to give Minnesota a 4-3 lead. It was his first goal in the NHL.

Staal scored from a sharp angle on the left side at 13:32 of the first to give the Wild a 2-1 lead.

Pearson tied it 1-1 with a wrist shot from the left face-off circle at 12:51 of the first, after Minnesota's Luke Kunin scored a power-play goal 2:58 into the game for a 1-0 lead.

Jacob Markstrom allowed four goals on 29 shots for the Canucks.

"He's been a brick wall for us all year," Horvat said. "He might want a couple back or one of them back tonight, but you know what, he's been our rock ever since Day One, and we wouldn't be in this position right now without him."

Wild defenseman Ryan Suter did not play. He missed the final 6:51 of Game 3 after blocking a shot in the third period. As part of the NHL Return to Play Plan, a team is not permitted to disclose player injury or illness information.

"Ryan plays all situations for us," forward Zach Parise said. "He's one of the top defensemen in the League. We missed him, there's no doubt about it."

Also scoring 11 seconds into overtime were Alexandre Burrows for the Canucks against the Boston Bruins in Game 2 of the 2011 Cup Final and J.P. Parise, Zach's father, for the New York Islanders against the New York Rangers in Game 3 of the 1975 Preliminary Round.
