Toffoli out for game 1

Tyler Toffoli will not play for the Vancouver Canucks against the St. Louis Blues in Game 1 of the Western Conference First Round at Rogers Place in Edmonton on Wednesday (10:30 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, SN, FS-MW).

The forward remains unfit to play, Canucks coach Travis Green said. He will miss his fourth consecutive game after playing in Game 1 against the Minnesota Wild in the Stanley Cup Qualifiers on Aug. 2 in Edmonton, the West hub city.

Vancouver won the next three games without Toffoli, who Green said has not resumed skating with the team.

As part of the NHL Return to Play Plan, a team is not permitted to disclose player injury or illness information.

Loui Eriksson is expected to remain in the Canucks lineup, likely on the second forward line with Bo Horvat and Tanner Pearson.

"It's not really an issue that we're talking about right now," Green said of Toffoli. "Obviously, we want him back when he's ready to go and we'll welcome him back when he is. But it's not like it just happened last game and we're sitting here talking about it a lot. It happened a bit ago."

The Canucks acquired Toffoli in a trade from the Los Angeles Kings on Feb. 17 in part because of his experience in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. He won the Stanley Cup with the Kings in 2014 and played 47 playoff games with them from 2013-18.

Vancouver, the No. 5 seed in the West, could have as many as 10 players in its lineup for Game 1 against St. Louis, the No. 4 seed, who did not have any NHL postseason experience until playing the Wild in the Qualifiers.

Toffoli scored 10 points (six goals, four assists) in 10 regular-season games with the Canucks.

"We miss him," Green said. "I'm not going to sit here and say we don't miss him. And, yeah, when we traded for him we knew what we were getting. But, again, we're not going to dwell on it. Would we love to have him healthy and in the lineup? For sure. He played great for us when he got here. I have no doubt he would have played well right now. He's played a lot of playoff games, but it's not something we're dwelling on right now."

It's possible the Canucks will get defenseman Oscar Fantenberg back after he missed Game 4 against the Wild on Friday. Green said he skated Tuesday and looked good, but they'll have to evaluate him Wednesday before determining if he can play in Game 1.

Olli Juolevi played in Fantenberg's place in Game 4 against the Wild, totaling 6:16 of ice time in 11 shifts.
