Gibson has huge night in Ducks' shootout win

ANAHEIM -- John Gibson made a season-high 49 saves and did not allow a goal in the shootout for the Anaheim Ducks in a 3-2 win against the Vegas Golden Knights at Honda Center on Wednesday.

Gibson was unavailable the previous five games because of an undisclosed injury.
"That's my job; I do it all the time," Gibson said. "You just have to make the plays and make the saves. The team did a good job of cleaning the rebounds out and helping me out when I needed it."
Adam Henrique scored two goals, and linemates Trevor Zegras and Troy Terry each had two assists and scored in the shootout for Anaheim (10-22-4), which had lost three straight.
"Our chemistry has been building all year," Henrique said.
Mark Stone and Ben Hutton scored, and Adin Hill allowed two goals on five shots before he was replaced by Logan Thompson, who finished with 22 saves for the Golden Knights (24-12-2), who lost back-to-back road games for the first time this season.
"You've got to find a way to score more than two goals," said Stone, the Vegas captain. "Against a team like that, you're not happy walking away with one point. You've got to beat them."

VGK@ANA: Henrique backhands a rebound for goal in 1st

Anaheim took a 1-0 lead at 3:27 of the first period. Henrique took a shot from the side of the net that was saved by Hill, but the puck fell in the crease, allowing Henrique to skate behind the net and push it across the goal line before it could be cleared by defenseman Daniil Miromanov.
Zegras assisted on the goal for his 100th point in the NHL.
"It's nice to have the 100th come off a Adam Henrique goal and Troy Terry assist," Zegras said. "I think that's pretty fitting for it, so definitely pretty cool."
The Ducks killed a 5-on-3 power play that lasted 1:51, then took a 2-0 lead on a wrist shot from the high slot by Henrique at 12:26. Thompson was then summoned to replace Hill.
"I'm not a big proponent of that, but something looked off," Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy said of the goalie change.

VGK@ANA: Stone scores SHG on a breakaway in the 1st

The Ducks went on their first power play 37 seconds after Thompson came in, but Stone forced a turnover by defenseman John Klingberg and scored on a short-handed breakaway to make it 2-1 at 13:15. It was Vegas' seventh short-handed goal of the season, which leads the NHL.
Gibson made his best save on a Reilly Smith backhand from in close following a turnover at 4:24 of the second. Zegras was called for cross-checking
Jonas Rondbjerg
two seconds after the save, but Anaheim killed that penalty as well.
"We misfired on some of our opportunities, and it ends up being probably the difference in the game," Cassidy said.

VGK@ANA: Gibson shuts down Smith in the 2nd

The Golden Knights tied it 2-2 at 13:32 of the second. Gibson made a save on Hutton from in close, but his follow-up shot went off a skate and into the net for his first goal since March 10 (30 games).
Vegas outshot Anaheim 17-7 in the first period and 20-5 in the second.
"We had a lot of really good chances," Vegas defenseman Alex Pietrangelo said. "I mean, [51] shots, you've got to find a way to capitalize."
Each team went 0-for-5 with the man-advantage.
"Either team scores on the power play, it probably doesn't end up going to a shootout, right?" Cassidy said.
