Aho scores twice to lift Hurricanes over Vegas in OT

RALEIGH, N.C.-- Sebastian Aho scored his second goal of the game with 1:11 remaining in overtime, and the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 4-3 at PNC Arena on Tuesday.

Aho took a pass from Andrei Svechnikov and scored on a wrist shot from the slot. Svechnikov beat Vegas forward William Carrier to a loose puck following an errant pass from Alex Pietrangelo.
"He wanted that puck, and that's a thing he does really well," Aho said. "He's strong and fast and he made a great pass to me. I had to bury that one."
Nicolas Hague scored for Vegas with 2:30 left in the third period to tie it 3-3, after Brett Howden cut Carolina's lead to 3-2 with 6:52 remaining on a redirect of Shea Theodore's shot.
"Obviously, they got a couple late ones, but I like how we got right back on in overtime," Carolina coach Rod Brind'Amour said. "It was a good game. It was certainly an exciting overtime."

Nino Niederreiter and Vincent Trocheck scored, and Frederik Andersen made 26 saves for the Hurricanes (28-9-2), who are 9-2-1 in their past 12.
Nolan Patrick had a goal and an assist for the Golden Knights (25-15-3), who had won two in a row and seven straight on the road, including 1-0 at the Washington Capitals on Monday. Laurent Brossoit made 26 saves.
"Playing a very good team on the other side that is almost at full health and rested, this was a tough game on the schedule for us," Vegas coach Pete DeBoer said. "Over a long season, it's important you find a way to get points in games like this. Maybe you don't deserve a point, but we hung around, our goalie was really good. We were opportunistic and got an important point."
Niederreiter took a pass from Jordan Staal then followed his own shot to score on a rebound for a 1-0 lead 4:44 of the second period.
"Whenever we play together, we know exactly what we have to do to be successful," Niederreiter said. "It's just trusting in one another. I think that's very key for us."
Trocheck scored 57 seconds later to make it 2-0. Svechnikov passed across the slot after Derek Stepan forced a turnover in the neutral zone.

Patrick scored his second of the season when he took a pass from Keegan Kolesar, drew the puck between his legs and scored on a backhand from the slot to get Vegas within 2-1 with 1:45 left. Carolina challenged for goaltender interference and it was ruled Hurricanes defenseman Ian Cole caused Howden to contact Andersen.
"Any goal kind of gives you a bit of confidence," Patrick said. "I just try to keep building, try to get better each game and try to contribute as much as I can."
Aho tipped Tony DeAngelo's shot from the left point for a power-play goal to make it 3-1 at 8:32 of the third period.
Andersen made close-range saves on Nicolas Roy and Theodore in overtime, He has won four in a row, 11 of 12, and is 22-6-0 this season.
"We know he has to be one of our best players if we are going to be successful, and he has been all year," Brind'Amour said.
NOTES: Golden Knights forward Mark Stone was minus-1 with one hit in 19:16 after missing two games in COVID-19 protocol. ... Vegas has taken five minor penalties two games in a row. ... With two assists, Svechnikov has a five-game multipoint streak (10 points; two goals, eight assists). ... DeAngelo has scored nine points (one goal, eight assists) in a five-game point streak. ...
