McDavid lifts Oilers past Golden Knights in OT

Connor McDavid scored 1:17 into overtime to give the Edmonton Oilers a 4-3 victory against the Vegas Golden Knights at Rogers Place in Edmonton on Saturday.

"Personally, it was ugly right from the start for me," said McDavid, who also had an assist. "I fought the puck all night, changed sticks a couple of times. Dropped my stick, lost my mouthguard a bunch of times. I had to stick with it and find a way to contribute to the game."
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had three assists, and Leon Draisaitl, Warren Foegele and Zach Hyman also scored for Edmonton (10-8-0). Stuart Skinner made 31 saves.
"It's fun to play good teams," Nugent-Hopkins said. "It definitely is. You've got to rise to the occasion, and this has been one of the hottest teams in the League so far. So we knew that coming in and obviously we needed to step our game up. To get the two points against that team is definitely big, and we've got to keep that feeling going on the road here."

Mark Stone scored twice, and Shea Theodore had two assists for Vegas (14-4-1), which had won six consecutive road games. Adin Hill made 19 saves.
"We had them on their heels," Theodore said. "It's good to get the one point out of it. If we play that way for 60 minutes, we should have good results in the end."
Foegele gave the Oilers a 1-0 lead at 1:56 of the first period with a backhand from the top of the crease.
Keegan Kolesar tied it 1-1 at 16:22 when Theodore's shot caromed off the back of his head past Skinner.
Stone gave Vegas a 2-1 lead at 4:09 of the second, scoring five-hole on a penalty shot after he was hooked on a breakaway by Ryan Murray.
"It was my bad, and next time I'll have it," Skinner said of the penalty shot. "He left it two inches off the ice. I wasn't quick enough to get down there. He's got a bullet. … I'm just going to learn from those and move on."

Draisaitl tied it 2-2 at 10:29 with a wrist shot from the bottom of the right circle. Hyman then scored 38 seconds into the third to put Edmonton ahead 3-2, one-timing a pass from McDavid on a power play.
Stone tied it 3-3 at 11:33 with a wrist shot from the slot.
The Oilers went the final 14:36 without a shot on goal in the third and were outshot 25-12 over the final two periods.
"We want two points," Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy said. "We're a good overtime team. We got the puck first and had our opportunity to generate something. They checked it back and good for them. There were good things to get a point. If we start a little better, a little cleaner, maybe we get the two. At the end of the day, we'll take the one and head to Vancouver."
NOTES: It was Stone's 22nd multigoal game. … McDavid has 14 NHL overtime goals.
