Roy lifts Golden Knights to OT win against Oilers

EDMONTON --Jack Eichel had a goal and two assists for the Vegas Golden Knights in a 4-3 overtime win against the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place on Saturday.

Nicolas Roy won it at 2:26 of overtime, tucking in his own rebound in the crease after Eichel held off Ryan Nugent-Hopkins along the right boards.
"Gusty win for us. It's a divisional game, and I thought we played well," Eichel said. "It's a really good team over there, they generate a lot of offense, and I thought we did a really good job limiting them. [Laurent Brossoit] played great, and we were able to capitalize on one of our power plays. Got some timely goals and got a big win."
Roy scored the winner after Nugent-Hopkins, Evander Kane and Mattias Ekholm had been stuck on the ice for almost two minutes.
"I thought we kept them to the outside until that last play that they scored on," Ekholm said. "Obviously, that is what we are tying to do in overtime, is to keep them out there and keep our guys fresh and get some changes on them, but obviously they managed to do it with us that time."

Jonathan Marchessault had a goal and an assist for the Golden Knights (46-21-6), who have won four straight and eight of their past nine. Brossoit made 27 saves in his first start since Feb. 25 because of a lower-body injury.
Vegas remained four points ahead of the Los Angeles Kings, who have one game in hand, for first place in the Pacific Division.
"It's a big win, a big (three-game) road trip," Golden Knights defenseman Brayden McNabb said. "[The Oilers] were sneaking up on us (in the standings), and we were able to get an extra point out of this game. We have that next-man up mentality, it's been that way all year. We've had injuries throughout the year, the guys are prepared, we have great depth, we have great goaltending, and it showed tonight."
Leon Draisaitl had a goal and an assist, and Stuart Skinner made 30 saves for the Oilers (41-23-9), who had their five-game winning streak end.
Edmonton is seven points behind the Golden Knights and three ahead of the Seattle Kraken, who hold the first wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoff from the Western Conference.
"It was a tight game. It was what you expect in the playoffs," Draisaitl said. "It is obviously a team that we could face. I think we know how to handle these types of games. Tonight didn't go our way, but we will take the point."

VGK@EDM: Eichel scores a goal early in the 1st

Eichel scored on the Golden Knights' first shot to make it 1-0 at 1:01 of the first period. He beat Skinner blocker side from the right circle off a cross-ice pass from Ivan Barbashev on a 2-on-1.
Zach Hyman then tied 1-1 at 3:28 on the Oilers' first shot of the game, tapping in a backdoor pass from Draisaitl near the right post.
"We couldn't find a lead in the game, and I think they're a team that plays a very comfortable style on the road, especially when they have the lead," Edmonton coach Jay Woodcroft said. "In the end, we fought back to get it into overtime, and they made a play in overtime and we didn't convert in overtime, and they found the extra point."
Pavel Dorofeyev put the Golden Knights in front 2-1 at 16:27 of the first, scoring over Skinner's glove from the high slot after William Karlsson couldn't handle a pass from Phil Kessel.
Draisaitl tied it 2-2 on a power play at 10:30 of the second period. He took a short saucer pass from Connor McDavid in tight and scored five-hole on Brossoit.
Marchessault responded for Vegas to make it 3-2 at 6:57 of the third period. He one-timed a pass from Eichel in the high slot that beat Skinner low blocker side.

"We got better as the game went on, and that's important," Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy said. "We had a day off yesterday, so sometimes it takes a while to get your legs going. Later start, end of the road trip. We were able to get through certain parts of the game when we weren't our best. What I loved about our team, what we talked about between periods, is that in the third, we were on top of pucks, we were keeping plays alive in the O-zone. I thought we were the better team in the third period."
Brossoit made his best save of the game on Ekholm at 7:15 of the third, sliding across the crease to turn away the defenseman's one-timer off a pass from McDavid.
However, Warren Foegele tied it 3-3 at 11:19 with a shot from the top of the right circle that trickled short side on Brossoit. The play started after Darnell Nurse poked the puck away from McNabb.
