Marchessault, Stone lift Golden Knights past Jets

WINNIPEG -- Jonathan Marchessault scored two straight power-play goals in the third period to help the Vegas Golden Knights to a 6-5 win against the Winnipeg Jets at Canada Life Centre on Tuesday.

"Sometimes you need the power play to win us games, and tonight it did," Marchessault said. "We just made the right plays at the right time. I don't think we were forcing too many plays, we were just seeing what was open and we were able to cash in."
Marchessault tied it 4-4 on the power play at 9:38 of the third period. His second power play goal of the period gave Vegas a 5-4 lead at 17:44.
"It takes you back a bit to maybe your junior (hockey) days when it's back-and-forth like that," Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said. "At the end of the day, you've got to play the game in front of you, and we needed some goals tonight to overcome some mistakes and we got them."

VGK@WPG: Marchessault scores PPG for his second goal

Mark Stone scored two goals, Chandler Stephenson had four assists and Daniil Miromanov had a goal and two assists for the Golden Knights (21-9-1). Adin Hill made 29 saves.
"[Stephenson] was very assertive tonight with his pace," Cassidy said. "He's got such deceptive speed. You can pre-scout it, say 'he can really go,' and all of sudden until you see him fly by you with an effortless stride, I don't think you truly appreciate it."
Mark Scheifele had a hat trick for the Jets (18-9-1), who lost a second straight game for the second time this season. Connor Hellebuyck made 27 saves.
"That was a [heck] of a hockey game," Winnipeg coach Rick Bowness said. "It could have gone either way. We battled hard tonight. We showed we can certainly play with them and with the best teams in the League, and we're going to continue to stay in that fight."

VGK@WPG: Stone nets rebound in waning seconds of 1st

After Marchessault's two straight goals, William Karlsson shot it into an empty net at 18:36 to make it 6-4. Scheifele completed his hat trick with two seconds remaining for the 6-5 final.
"It was just kind of back and forth," Scheifele said. "We scored one and let off the gas pedal a little bit and then gave them a little bit of life."
Scheifele made it 1-0 Jets at 9:22 of the first period, deflecting a Josh Morrissey point shot.

VGK@WPG: Miromanov snipes his first career goal

Miromanov's first NHL goal tied it 1-1 at 11:30 of the first. His wrist shot along the ice and through traffic beat Hellebuyck stick side.
"It was a real hard game and it's tough to play here," Miromanov said. "They were really coming hard. Definitely very happy to win. I was just trying to do my job and play hard in the [defensive] zone and jump up into the rush, and sometimes it pays off."
Stone made it 2-1 Golden Knights with two seconds remaining in the first, collecting the rebound from a Nicolas Hague point shot.
Morgan Barron tied it 2-2 at 11:16 of the second period. After collecting a rebound from a Dylan Samberg shot from the point, Barron's first shot hit the post before he backhanded the rebound over Hill's pad.
Stone's second of the game put Vegas ahead 3-2 at 15:34 of the second. The goal was Stone's 500th NHL point, coming in his hometown of Winnipeg.
"[Stone] is our leader, he's our captain, and he's been great on and off the ice for us," Marchessault said. "So any time that that guy gets rewarded I think it's meaningful because he plays so well everywhere and he makes everybody on the ice look better."

VGK@WPG: Scheifele scores 3 goals vs. Golden Knights

Sam Gagner tied it 3-3 at 16:13 when he tipped in Brenden Dillon's shot from the blue line.
Scheifele's second of the game made it 4-3 Jets 41 seconds into the third period with a one-timer from the left face-off dot on the power play. Marchessault then tied it 4-4 on the power play at 9:38 from the top of the left circle. His second goal came from nearly the same spot to put Vegas ahead 5-4.
"They're a good team for a reason and when we would get a lead, they kept pouncing on us," Scheifele said. "They were keeping their speed and we just had to be a little more on our toes, as opposed to letting the game come to us."
