Blues veterans day

Several NHL teams wore special military-themed warmup jerseys for Veterans Day and Remembrance Day Thursday. More than just a different look, the jerseys will be sold to benefit foundations and funds that support military veterans and their families.

The St. Louis Blues honored the 13 U.S. service members who were killed during an evacuation mission in Afghanistan in August with a patch on the jersey that included a patch with all of their names. The families of each of the 13 fallen service members will be receiving a jersey and the rest are being raffled off to benefit H.E.R.O.E.S Care, which provides financial aid, employment opportunities, and mental health care services to military members and their families.
Proceeds will also be going to the Lance Cpl. Jared Schmitz Memorial Fund. Schmitz was one of the 13 killed, and was from Wentzville, Missouri. His family was at the Blues' game Thursday for the ceremonial puck drop. A video featuring Schmitz's father Mark talking about his late son played during pregame.

The Detroit Red Wings' jersey had a different word in place of each player's nameplate. Excellence, liberty, dedication, warrior, justice and loyalty were some of the words used. Proceeds from the auction, which also includes sticks and pucks, will benefit the Detroit Red Wings Foundation the Motor City Veterans Hockey Association.

The Pittsburgh Penguins' jersey auction proceeds will be going to Friends of the VA Pittsburgh Fisher House and Pittsburgh Warriors Hockey.

The Seattle Kraken chose Headstrong Project, which provides cost-free mental health treatment for military members, as their auction beneficiary, along with the team's One Roof Foundation.

Vegas Golden Knights military-themed jerseys are going to The Folded Flag Foundation, which provides scholarships and grants for spouses and children of military and government personnel who died because of U.S. combat operations.

The Montreal Canadiens' jerseys are being auctioned off to benefit the official charitable cause of the Canadian Forces.
