Alex Ovechkin waited too long to win the
Prince of Wales Trophy
to just leave it on the table.

One long-standing and somewhat believed superstition is that if you touch the conference trophy, you won't get to touch the Stanley Cup. But Ovechkin, in his 13th NHL season and playng for a conference champion for the first time, cares not for your superstitions.

The Washington Capitals captain even called his shot (touch?) with NBC Sports' Pierre McGuire in a post-game interview ahead of the trophy presentation.
"You're gonna see right now," Ovechkin said after he was asked if he would touch the Prince of Wales Trophy.

Caps-shifts

The captain promptly skated over, put his hand on the trophy without hesitation, then carried it back over to his teammates.
In case you need a refresher, Vegas Golden Knights alternate captain Deryk Engelland
touched the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl
on the advice of three-time Stanley Cup champion Marc-Andre Fleury after winning the Western Conference.
So, this season, someone who touched the conference trophy will also touch the Cup.
